View Full Version : MacBook Help/Questions - +Rep
I am thinking of getting a Apple MacBook for my birthday/christmas but i dont know wether to just get a Windows laptop instead of Apple/Mac. I would like to know wether their easy to understand and pick up from quite fast. I have used some in school and have had difficulty but this was my first time on Apple. I have just liked the software and the sleek look of them. So if anyone using Mac could help me or am i just better off sticking with Windows which i have used most my life. +Rep for HELPFUL replys. Here is a picture of what it looks like.

Mac's are good, however, if your using it for games etc then you will want to use Windows.
It purely depends on your needs and if you think "Yeah, I can use this fine".
My mate has a macbook and he loves it, it does depend if you like how a Mac feels.
Thanks for the reply. +Rep. Some of it would be used for gaming but some of it would be school work and programs it has. Are they very user-freindly or are they hard to pick up and understand? thats the main question i need to know. Thanks again.

It depends how quickly you can pick up skills really, some people find it easy to switch, others have a real problem.
I personally find it easy enough to use one, but prefer windows over them anyway. You will need to find Mac versions of games to use them on a mac base, you would need to ask the staff at the store if it will work with a Mac :)
I'm not sure about the EXE though, haven't tried it.

Macs are very expensive for the hardware you actually get, a windows laptop with the same specs would be much less. However macs are generally easier to use (which is not always a good thing) but lack customizability and can't be upgraded at all.
I'd say go for a Windows laptop, but get one with XP as vista is 'teh suckage k'.

Depends what you feel comfortbale with.
Macs are basically for Photos, iTunes etc.
If you want to access the Internet, And Game, I reccomend Windows.
Just because you like the look,
I think you should experiment more with it at school.
Also the prices :P

We were using macs to edit a very short video (10 mins) the first macs we tried weren't even compatible with ALL the cameras I tried using a firewire (samsung, JVC, Sony) so we tried the other macs that were still less than three years old. The film was taking so far around 5 hours and we hadn't even got halfway through it when it crashed and even though the data was saved it was completely useless. We tried for over an hour to get the footage over to another newer mac but it said "estimated time remaining: 436 hours"
We then started again from the beginning on a cheap windows laptop using movie maker and the film took two hours and came out looking much better than the mac version would have.
So overall they are cute and funky looking but they don't last very long and when they get over three years old they start becoming useless.
(I was using iMovie)
(For all you people who are going to say this is a load of rubbish it is a true story!)
Right, I'm a MacBook user and I switched from Windows. Best thing I have ever done. Plus the fact if you buy a MacBook how you can run Windows XP or Vista. So overall you're better with a Mac as you can now run anything. The Mac OS is just incredible compared to Vista. The ease of use but still being able to have an amazing looking design is something unheard of in desktops. The windows Vista looks awful compared to Leopard.
People say that Macs are expensive and over priced, however check the OS prices. OS X Leopard is £85 for the FULL package and installs on any Intel Mac. However, the BASIC Vista is £99 and that has basically a different look and that's it. Also the fact Vista is probably the worse OS since Windows ME.
Viruses are also a big thing, on a Windows you have to cram it to the rim with software to control the viruses and spyware you receive on a daily bases. However, with a Mac there is nothing. I have never had to download a scanner nor scan my MacBook. The firewall which is built in controls everything amazingly.
Out the box and go is probably the best bit. When I bought my MacBook it was a 2 hour drive home, so instead of waiting I got it out the box and switched it on. That was it, setup done! However, if it was a Windows you'd go through TONNES of menus and asking for details that they don't really need. Then at the end of it all it will ask you to connect to the internet.
The few club is cool also. As not many people know what a Mac is and those who do love them. So people are generally interested in the sleek looking and shiney MacBooks. The design just says "I'm cool - end of right?". I haven't found a Laptop to date that looks better than a MacBook. I like to have whatever I'm using to look the part, and a MacBook does that with ease.
I also saw someone said you're better off with a Windows to browse the internet? Why? So you can attract the millions of viruses out there to your computer? The connectivity in a Mac is amazing. When I got home I switched it on and it had connected instantly. However, my Granda's £900 ZooStorm laptop had a good 30 mins to connect as it needed the Belkin software. Just remember you can visit trojan filled sites and leave without a trojan, unlike a windows :)

I seriously lol'd at the above post, I have never read such a load of ******** on a forum. Only complete idiots have any problems with viruses and the reason macfags don't get them is because hardly anyone uses Macs so it is pointless writing viruses for them.
Right, okay. Ask the top Windows Developers what they create things like widgets and so on, on :P
