A massive plume of black smoke has spread over London from a large warehouse fire on the site for the 2012 Olympics.

Firefighters have confirmed the smoke contains asbestos. People with respiratory conditions have been advised to stay indoors.
An investigation into the cause is underway, but early indications are it is an accident rather than arson.
The fire on the western edge of the Olympic Park, near Stratford, in the east of the capital, was tackled by at least 75 firefighters.
London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner Dave Brown said: "There was asbestos reported and large plumes of smoke, but the fire brigade acted very quickly to suppress the plumes of smoke and help local residents."
"The investigation into the cause is still ongoing and not thought to be suspicious."

No casualties have been reported.
Hundreds of workers were evacuated from nearby buildings.
The bright weather conditions meant the huge black cloud was visible over large areas of London.
Paul Hallam, 50, a production worker at a nearby printing firm, saw the fire take hold.
He said: "There were flames coming about 100ft high in the end. The whole of that building, about the size of a football pitch, went up. We could feel the heat through the glass."
Dr Keith Prowse, chairman of the British Lung Foundation, said: "It's not clear what the smoke fumes or particles contain.

"We would, however, advise anyone in the area who has a respiratory condition to stay indoors as the smoke could cause them problems."
The centre of the fire was in a disused building off Waterden Road, which was about to be demolished as part of the 2012 Games.
The high-speed Channel Tunnel rail link runs nearby.
A Eurostar spokesman said the incident has not affected the new High Speed One line, which will begin carrying European services on Wednesday.
There has been no disruption to flights from nearby London City Airport.
Firefighters are expected to be on site overnight to ensure the fire is damped down properly due to the possibility of hot spots flaring up.
Currently 20 traveller families live at Waterden Crescent off Waterden Road. They are due to be moved as their site is in the Olympic Park.

How strange, if it was that I think it could be arson even though the police don't think it is...

So you want taxpayers money to be wasted on an event that will be rubbish, JUST so you can say to the government that they wasted money. And you're an idiot, you probably don't play sport, because Olympic funding has been increased, more money is thrown into sport like hockey (which i play) AND the stadiums etc, and benefits those who play as well as watch. You think you're really clever don't you.

To be honest, yes I do.
It will hopefully stop future governments WASTING MONEY on more crappy events. So i'm not the idiot, you are. I would rather and so would the Taxpayers, money going to Hospitals, Schools and so on than silly Hockey Clubs. Yes, I do think i'm cleverer than you with the rubbish you have just come out with :)

tbh I think it will be a major target for terrorists so they should watch the security in 2012. All we know we could be driving hovercraft's then and the Olympics will be held on mars instead of London!

I would rather see our money go towards the nhs, or funding new youth centres and things like that...
We don't really need the olympics here anyway.. what's the point of building a multi-million state of the art sport's villlage that will probably only be used in an maujor event like this once.

I see but still although they have already been paying out so much; surely you'd want it to be a success so that money that could have gone to Hospitals etc isn't wasted? Also it all encourages Sport activities and helps tackle problems with fitness in the UK. And it'd be a problem if there was a disaster with it or something because haven't we entered to be a candidate to host the 2018 Football World Cup or something?

The money we 'make' will be very small compared to how much we have spent, still leaving us with a massive loss of money.

I sure hope it doesn't fail, that'll make the wasted money taxpayers have paid even more useless.

I'm sure the UK will get those millions of pounds back eventually with this Olympic Stadium. It may have its uses, so until we know for sure it is a complete waste or a success, we may as well say nothing rather than come out with irrational jabber.

The last country to host the games also lost out big time, so what will make us any different AND we are spending more money than they did.

But you make it sound like the buildings being built get demolished the second the games end. There is a chance that the UK will make good use and somehow make the money back over x amount of years by using the buildings for future events. There is that possibility, nothing is all black and white.

I personally think the games will be good for us, and also the same with the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Increases tourism for our countries, and will also boost our ecconomy. The Olympics is more then just some 'silly event'. Its encouraging excersise, when child obiesity is at a all time high and its going to improve public transport. As previously stated, its not just all black and white.

Surely the government will get money back when these new it is being used, e.g ticket prices etc. And whoever said Undertaker isn't proud to be British...are you kidding? Some of his views are extreame right wing.

The buildings will not be used after the event, I personally can't think of many events that could run frequently and make enough money to sustain the costs. A good example is the Dome.

As I have repeated before, the cost of the Games greatly outweighs any money that comes in. Oh and i'm proud to be English :)

You thinking what I'm thinking?

Said Micheal Howard :P

Oh I am, the Dome is and was a disgrace just like the Olympics will be. Millions were wasted on the Dome, Billions will be wasted on the Games.

Yeah let's just take a chance with the Taxpayers money!

God help us if you were in government.

Have you ever heard of history? - What you do is look at past events and trace patterns, the patterns are that the last Olympics failed and so did Labours great Dome.
