PRISON officers in some of Britain's toughest jails are wearing slippers on night shift - so they don't wake up the cons.
The softly, softly approach has been introduced in some Victorian prisons which have noisy slate floors.
The switch was made because of complaints from Category A prisoners including armed robbers, murderers and paedophiles. But guards claim there is a side benefit - they can now eavesdrop on inmates' conversations without the cons realising they are there.
One jail where the guards have already changed to slippers is Wakefield in Yorkshire - home to Scottish child killer Robert Black and Soham murderer Ian Huntley.
Prison officer David Ward, 42, who works at the jail, said: "We are wearing slippers and trainers so we don't disturb the prisoners.
"It was mainly the Category A prisoners who were complaining as they are checked on a regular basis through the night for obvious reasons."
But he added: "It is useful when they cannot hear you moving around outside.
"They whisper to each other at night, sometimes through pipes and cell walls. They use all the nooks and crannies and this way we can pick up some useful information."
Prison Officers Association spokesman Glyn Travis added: "To be honest, wearing slippers is more comfortable and many officers think it is a good idea."

Ye, I seen this in the mirror today. Prisons are getting ridiculous. They moan about everything. If the prisoners didn't do the crime they wouldn't have to moan about prisons. If you do the crime you have to do the time.

You should get no sympathy of benefits if your in prison.
Prisoners get that many perks its no wonder they commit more crimes and end up going back. Prisons should be VERY basic and prisoners made to feel that they are like hell so never want to return.

The prisoners are the ones complaining not the prison officers :s surely prison oficers health and safety is at risk without appropriate footware if a riot etc started?

well yes i think that example: if someone tried breaking into ur house and held a knife to you and you hit them and stabbed them and they died i think you should NOT be punished at all as it was self defence and you would have been killed / injured if you had not retaliated

Agreed.
They are breaking into your house and the goverment do not want you to do anything about it, if you hit them it would be you the one that gets done. This country has such stupid laws.
If someone broke into my house I would hit them over the head with whatever i could find, if it killed them it should be there own fault for breaking into someones house.

wouldn't it be cool if we didn't have human rights for criminals. i think it would be good to see the paedo's serial killers, murderers etc etc all the bad people put into a labyrinth together then forced to kill each other then the last survivor is shot tbh it would give them what they deserved.

I do think expecting prison officers to wear slippers is going a little too far! Surely them wearing slippers carries risks. Wouldn't the easier solution have been to offer prisoners some type of ear muffs?

That's interesting. I would never have imagined that the prison officers would do such a thing.

I guess it's good, though. Because it does mean prisoners can't hear the guards approach, which means they can easily eavesdrop.

Prisons do seem to soft, but slippers don't seem to be a big deal so they shouldn't complain about wearing them. I think prisoners should be comforatble enough so they need sleep as thats a basic human right but they shouldn't ahve anyh priviliges. I would say that prisoners should all be made to work, so that thye're at least paying for their keep in some way as there must be plenty of low-skilled heavy-labour needing jobs that they can work on, and they shouldn't be givena s much time jsut to socialise or ahve free tiem. Prison should be a punishment.
