Okay schools are now getting extra power to ban mobiles from schools. Also they have the power to make you hand your phone in before the school day starts and then get it back at the end of the day.

They can just shout "I SUSPECT YOU HAVE A KNIFE". That gives em permission to search you anytime :(!!!

They already have the power to enforce any rules that they think are reasonable and would benefit their students (even if adolescant teenagers don't get why).
I think use of mobiles during class should be penalised, but I see no reason for them not to be used during breaks. I can't imagine not having my phone on me at any point, there are so many reasons I need to use it.
I don't think pupils should have to leave phones at home - there are circumstances when they'd need to make an emergency call, or to be contactable.

Don't go to school anymore, so don't have that problem. :P

what people don't seem to grasp is that the new rules that are coming into place will allow them to make you do it.

I just turn my phone off and hide it in the secret compartment of my bag :P because that way if I lose my bag someone will think oh only crap school stuff here and drop it again :P.

no surprise. my school doesnt allow us to bring mobile phones to school like when i was in secondary 2. then they unbanned it saying that we can bring phones but cannot use it during school.
during the ban tho, theyre allowed to search us and if we're caught with one, theyll confiscate it and their parents can collect it a month later.

Exactly..
They can't force you to give them it, it's your property.
The only time you can be searched at school is if they think you have a weapon, but you still have to agree to it - Otherwise they have to call the police ;)
If a teacher went to take my mobile, I would simply have told them to 'F OFF' lol, it's just something I don't let anyone take, my mates hardly get a look in at my mobile, and no I'm not embarrassed of it.

The police once did a thing at a train station though , they lte people "volunteer" to be searched for a knife and if you didn't they searched you anyway as they claimed yo uhad something to hide!

i saw that on gmtv yesterday morning, i think people should be penalised if using it in class, but in breaks it should be allowed.

I would refuse, I don't care if it's law. I'm not one to give it in.

LOL.
I should add a disclaimer to my posts: My advice should not be followed, often inaccurate.
But yeah, I'm not one to hand in my phone, cause I really don't trust people with my stuff.
