Hi,

I recently saw a mmocc coded in javascript and php which was pretty reasonable. would there be any downsides to coding in JS and Php (using mysql)

JS disabled in browsers would be the main one.

Slow(er) probably, I have seen it I believe.. can't remember the name though.

There were tons of AJAX requests which slowed my browser down quite a bit, although there are probably some security hazzards with that.

Could you give us the link to this MMOCC?

I'm guessing so, as Flash (still not that secure) and Director files are mostly encrypted. If not they use lookup files which would be encrypted. The down side with PHP and MySQL is that you would need it highly secure and if not, a hell of a good backup system so you can restore data every day after being constantly 'hacked'.

I agree with what Caleb said, if the entire application was built using Javascript and PHP/MySQL it would very quite slow, for instance the miniHomes script by Simon is quite slow for me due to the mass amounts of javascript.

You see Facebook has got the idea with only using it when necessary instead of trying to go overboard and doing every in AJAX when normal HTML and page-loading is fine.

kynto.com

the messager is very similar to habbo also, when browsing haven't seen that much ripping because the owner removes it when he finds out but doesn't take the action far enough

very enjoyable though;)
