I was reading the thread about 'Soulja Boy' & someone stated that the South is the reason Hip Hop is here. But then after that, someone said Australia & New Zealand is & I definitely have to disagree.

The reason Hip Hop is here is because of the USA. If you really go back into the early days of Hip Hop, you'll see it started with Run DMC & all them. Not with some Australian artist.

& it was started by African-Americans.

What's your opinion?

It came from fusions of disco and black cultural music like jazz and rnb (rhythm'n'blues not rnb like JT or Rihanna or something), because in jazz there's a type of singing called scat singing which is making general noises, from that came talking to a tune rather than singing, and that of course became a style itself which we know as rap.

edit: get the album "Jazzmatazz" by Guru (aka Gang Starr), it's a tribute to the jazzy roots of hip hop

its been here longer than people think. it's harder to pinpoint it's origins than rock. it's virtually poetry read in a specific tone. the only thing you can really say is who popularized it, which was of course run dmc.

NB: listening to Run DMC will not make you a better hip hop fan. Just because they were around a long time ago it doesn't mean they're actually any good.

Besides, Sugarhill Gang (whose track "Rapper's Delight" is usually thought of as the first hip hop track) came out before Run DMC, as did the Fatpack Band or something like that, whose song title I can't remember, but that was the actual first hip hop single.

It originated in New York.
