Catherine Tate has suggested that the next series of Doctor Who could be the last for actor David Tennant.
The comedian, speaking on Radio 2's Jonathan Ross programme, said: "I think it's maybe David's last series."

The BBC refused to comment on Mr Tennant's future as the show's star.

Tate, who first appeared in the 2006 Christmas special, is to return as the doctor's assistant, Donna, for the entire run of the fourth series.

She will also be joined for several episodes by the doctor's former companion Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman.

When pressed on whether Tennant would return to play the timelord in special Dr Who shows in future, Tate replied: "Possibly."

The comedian also confirmed that the forthcoming series would be her last.

Tate made her Doctor Who debut last year as a runaway bride who found herself transported into the Tardis as she prepared for her wedding on Christmas Eve.

The episode attracted an audience of 9.4 million when it was screened on BBC One on Christmas Day.

This year's Christmas special, starring Kylie Minogue, is due to be screened at 1850 GMT on 25 December.

Speaking to Doctor Who magazine, the pop star said appearing in the show was "like stepping back in time".

"I really felt at home being back in the world of TV," she added. "I've definitely got the acting bug again!"

Thoughts?

Best Docter Yet.

However, the doctor only has something like 1-2 "Regenerations" left? so they can only have 1-2 new doctors befor he dies =[

Not exactly, there's someone who can renew his regenerations. So it all could be good. Also, I doubt this is his last.

But i thought that a timelord can only regenerate 12 times, then death?

And where did it say that?

It was established in The Deadly Assassin (1976) that a Time Lord can regenerate twelve times before permanently dying - a total of thirteen incarnations

i rest my case

so to correct myself, we have 3 doctors to look forward to after Tennant, but sadly its a dieing franchise! :'(

QFT!!!

Hes been the best yet by far! He adds that essence of comedy that doesn't sound like it was intended!

(although it was in the script but he makes it seem so natural!)

but thats where you are WRONG.
The master came back last series, he had gone through all 13 regenerations previously, therefore couldnt regenerate right?
Wrong.

Some people think, myself included, that when the timelords died, the remaining could regenerate as many times as they want considering it is lead to beleive the timelord elders control the regenerations.

i would admit that the BBC might extend the series by not adhering to the so called "rules" they set some 30 years ago just to increase their income.

However, i wish to stick to my guns and say that if the BBC keep it authentic (which they apparently haven't done if we look at the Master) Then we'll only see three more doctors, which I'm gutted about =[

It was first stated in The Deadly Assassin[26] that a Time Lord can regenerate twelve times before dying (thirteen incarnations in all). There were exceptions to this rule, however: when the Master reached the end of his regenerative cycle, he took possession of the body of another person to continue living. The Master was also offered a new cycle of regenerations by the High Council to save the Doctor from the Death Zone, which may indicate that there are methods to circumvent the 12 regeneration limit. The Master says in "The Sound of Drums" that the Time Lords "resurrected" him to fight in the Time War, which appears to support this. It was revealed in "The Brain of Morbius" that the Time Lords also use the Elixir of Life in extreme cases, where regeneration is not possible. This may be the reason for additional regeneration cycles being granted.
