You know the image on current top story on the UK homepage, the guy with the bear hat and beard - what gesture is he actually making?

Is he scratching his head, because it looks more like hes swearing, aha?

i've always thought he was putting his hand up to answer a question or something, but you've said that he's probably scratching his head ..or ear.
