Heck if you buff up on you knowledge and get some A's there no reason why you couldn't get a Honda Civic. But you have to bare in mind the cost of learning to drive as well, tests, licence, lessons - then if you go out with a parent, potentially petrol.
After you pass, petrol, insurance, tax.
A lot to think about.
When you say a Honda Civic, I hope you mean the elder Type R. (Although that'd cost you a bomb..)

Nope i mean the new one :(
How much will my driving lessons cost overall?

How much will my driving lessons cost overall?
Depends on the driving school / instructor
£15 - £25 an hour
2 hours a week = £30-50
40 hours needed (on average)
£600-1000
£48 fee to get a provisional license
£50 per test (+ lesson fee) so £80-£100 per test
After that like has been said...
Money to buy car, insurance (can be very expensive, £1500ish), petrol etc.

Yup well, 40 hours of lessons, can be slightly less or a lot more, depending on how you are / if you fail tests

So its around 1400 for everything - car?
Yup, I don't have, or want a car yet either, only because I don't need one, I can walk everywhere I need to go and I don't need petrol ;)
Of course when the time comes i'll buy a car and i'm sure that wont be cheap either :P

When am i allowed to start lessons ect..?
As soon as you're 17 you can send off for the provisional licence, then when you have that you can start learning to drive :)

I'm pretty sure you can't :P
You of course need to pass the theory test too before you can get your full licence, you could buy a book on that to splash the cash!

lol@the thought of having a new civic, insurance would be about 5 grand as well as the car probs costing more than that
you need an older car lets say 1999-2004
Also one with a smaller engine would keep insurance down

a 1.4 litre engine is the max you should be looking at i'd say

Yeh but im oviously not going to be able to drive ether of my parents cars as they are both pretty expensive and powerfull, Slk and a Accord both automatic so even on provisional i can't drive them :l
Ross
Are you planning to learn to drive in an automatic or manual?
GoldenMerc
07-01-2008, 04:54 PM
Is it possible for me to learn in a automatic?
Ross
Yes, but then you can only drive an automatic legally
Whereas if you learn in a manual you can drive both (and vans and tractors) whey
GoldenMerc
07-01-2008, 04:58 PM
oviously its easier to drive automatic ye?
Would that come out cheaper aswell?

Might have to pay more for lessons if you want to learn in an automatic I think.

Costs an absolute fortune to get on the road so I wouldn't be looking for a brand new car / semi new car straight away.
For me, just to learn to drive it was something like this:
Provisional License: £48
Theory Test - £35 (I think, can't actually remember)
Practical Test - £47.50 x 2 (failed 1st)
40 driving lessons @ £20 = £800
So that's probably more than £1000. Then if you buy a newish car you're looking at 6-7000 to pay for that. Then you've got car insurance, which on a new car is likely to be £1800+ & assuming you can't pay it off cash then you have to take out direct debit which adds like another 20% on top, so you're looking at more than £2k for car insurance.
Then you've got car tax, which on a powerful car might be quite a bit (depending on engine size, emissions etc). THEN you've got petrol money which soon mounts up.
All of this + you'll have a massive excess that you don't take any notice of until the day you have a bump and the insurance company are demanding hundreds of pounds off you before they'll do anything for ya.
Then theres the potential that sommat could go wrong and you've gotta fork out for that unexpectedly..
Basically what I'm getting at is that unless you've got a job that pays well theres no point in relying on money from your parents that gonner be a one off (for doing your GCSEs) because when that runs out and stuff starts going wrong you're gonner be in trouble ;]
Basically get a rubbish car for your first year. I started off in a 13 year old Ford Fiesta simply because it was cheap to run and so I didn't have to rely on my parents to run it, I could run it myself. Now I've got the newest/best car in my family cos I saved up :eusa_danc

You wont get insurance of a civic at 17?
Easier to start off with a clio or something, then maybe 18/19 get a civic.
Build up the no claims (y).
Up too you though, if you've got the money, why not spend it :P.
