I was talking to my form tutor today in College, and we were talking about how parliement wants to put through that requirement of everyone staying in school till they're 18. Apparently if they do so, EMA (Educated Maintenance Allowance) will be axed. I don't recieve EMA but I know so many people who depend on it throughout college, along with bonuses and stuff. Frankly, that screws over most colleges and it stops people even attending them?
I was just like shomg when I found out... I struggle to get to College sometimes but people who really have money problems will be stuffed in the future. What dya think? And yes, this is all true.

Personally I have a buspass to get to school but I know people who pay £2 to get up and back and then have £1 for their lunch and it just isnt fair that when these guys get into 6th form they'll have to survive on £1.

makes sense to me, the reason they do ema is an incentive for people to go to college. I very much doubt they'll leave the people who REALLY need it without any financial bonus's, half the people don't need it anyway. They wont put the law into place anyway.

I know people who seriously need it. Their parents are seriously underpaid and rather tight. If that happened then damn, unlucky. I'm not saying this just for present tense, but in the future there's always going to be a few who have the same situation. I live 30 minutes away from College, I pay £400 per school year on travel alone, and then there's book fees and lunch. Considering that, it's going into close £700-800. I'm sure there's others who can't do that due to their EMA but try to survive. I know that people splash out when they get their bonus, but some genuinely need it.

some people do actualy need it, but a lot don't. if they dont axe it altogether then factors which affect how much money people get should be revised and perhaps changed.

I dont get EMA, so it wouldnt really affect me.
But i do find it unfair also, as some students only go for the EMA, and i dont see why it should run off your parents earnings, as its not your parents that are attending, and even if your parents over the amount of whatever it is, that still shouldnt mean you dont get money as its not really yours to spend?
I strongly disagree with ema, so i wouldn't be bothered if it goes..
But, i doubt it will, as as you stated, many colleges will loose out on students etc.

The government is stupid they care too much about how the country is viewed rather than the people living in it.

Seeing as they're doing virtually everything the Scottish do, why not just kill off University Fees too? Oh wait, that'd be logical... Only reason Scotland doesn't do EMA is because of that. Then again, dunno if they don't do it! Some people I know are saving up their EMA for University fees since they can't afford it all. It really is shooting some people in the foot, and I know I'm doing that myself with all my earnings.

my mate gets EMA but his parents are rich as hell and they live in a massive house. he gets about £30/Week + tonnes in bonus.'
He bought his PS3 with it all and games etc.
I won't see a penny.

i no for a fact that i do actually need it my mum only earns 15k a year and got 2 other kids to support other than me and its about £2.50 just for a SINGLE to get to the college im going to.
i never agreed with EMA to begin with. it should be that everyone gets it, or no one does. I never got money from my parents so i went to get a job. To me, EMA encourages people not to get a job which gives them little/no experience in the work place which gets them even more behind the rest of us.
Some people do depend on it, however, there are jobs available that they can get. It then gives them an education and experience. I do not recieve EMA by the way and so it will not affect me as such, but i cannot see why they cannot find alternate methods of getting to school eg biking/walking or catching a lift with a friend. As for lunch, its cheaper to by the food at home rather than spending it a school/shops. If you have a debit card/cash, leave your wallet at home. Since i started school again, almost 2 weeks ago, i have spent £0. Mainly because i only £5 in my account but normally i would go out spending my money at morrisons.
So imo, EMA is not needed, and in most situations it makes it worse :)

YEAH, JUST GET A JOB. I work 15 hours a week and get around 300 a month minimum, and mummy and daddy pay nothing for me. As much as everyone likes to believe, the government aren't stupid. If this does happen like i said earlier they wouldn't leave the people who need it badly with nothing. You're saying this'll happen when they make the leaving age of education 18 compulsory, i'm sure they'd just have a 'free school dinner' scheme or free bus passes like there is at school.

no my school is tight like that as they only provide it for years 7 - 11 not for the 6th form students.

Oh well, I'll be in uni then... You do realise that if it gets scrapped, it'll be a few years notice?

To be fair though, the EMA was pointless and badly drawn up. Only child families benefit from the money while families with about 4-5 children don't if they're just over the limit.

they get child benefits anyway - thats what they are for
theres no need for ema
they get child benefits anyway - thats what they are for
theres no need for ema
child benefits stop coming when your 16... and thats for clothes/food from when your born till your 16 to your parents...
i dont care if EMA stops, i don't get it and most of my mates who do get it, don't spend it on educational stuff, but spend it on materialistic items :8
when isn't it an allowance for educational stuff? or transport to college or food at college... not for xbox 360 games, as an example
im not saying all people spend it on this, but majority do therefore i think its pointless..., or all should get it, or nobody should get it.

Silly really, EMA attracted me to college. It wont effect me as I'll either be in Uni of have a job in the next two years.
i dont get EMA, but i may do sooon. my dad could lose his joba nd os that would put me on £30 a week from the EMA. Would i care if it went, not really, because i even suggested giving it my mum and dad because we would only get £90 a week. (i have a job remember)
Having to stay in school till your 18 is a bad idea. Your just going to get the people who don't want to learn to ruin it for every one else.

im going into college next year, and i know ill get ema, neither of my parents work because my dad's a carer for my mum, who had a brain tumour.
to be honest, i probably will only spend a portion of it on educational means, but i still think they should keep it, there are people that are worse of than me, who do genuinely need it.
