View Full Version : National Service may be compulsary once again.

Apparently, today in parliment and on the news they were discussing what to do about people who commit offenses daily, have ASBOs and still don't give a damn. With the jails filling up too, they can't go on for much longer. Today, I heard that someone suggested National Service (compulsary army service) be the solution to this problem of young youths who spend their time drinking, causing criminal damage & relatively being a nuisance to the public.
I for one will not stand for this, because this is punishing all young people from 18-25 (I think) who have done good as well. What I think they should do is bring everyone who has a criminal record into the service for a X amount of years. Some would say this would cause a 'bad lads army' but in the end, the program on ITV did it and that changed them into real disciplined people. I can't see them doing it for the general nation... But they might.
Other suggestions were to be tougher on teenagers/young adults in criminal situations compared to adults. It is fact that teenagers get the benefit of the doubt and adults do get it alot worse. In this time and age, National Service would not be the way to go. I don't have a actual report on it, but when I heard from my mother I quite literally had a heartattack.
Whatcha think of all of it? I wouldn't make it up if it wern't true tbh.

i've been thinking this for years - 'people who commit offenses daily, have ASBOs and still don't give a damn' sent away to the army to give them a taste of their own medicine in a way, and make them the little guys who are getting ordered around.

They've suggested National Service for widespread purposes though. That's the worry of it all. Would you want to be sent out?

I'd wouldn't mind if National Service would return really, but it would cost a lot for the whole nation and would slow us down as I want to become a lawyer, I'd be 25 starting university, I'm going to be about 29-30 when I get a degree which I think is a reasonable bit of life wasted :P
So yeah I think anyone who has a reasonable criminal records should do it.

nope - i am completely against that idea. they stopped it for a reason.

Exactly... & Jordy, it'd probably be 1-2 years however it's just saying right now. It would bring a bigger punishment to people who are young and feel commiting crimes is 'fun'. There'd be new recruits everyday when you think about it.

What? So even if you weren't commiting crimes you'd still have to do service?

no, but if war broke out, you would.

Sounds great, my grandfather had to do that or go to prison, he went to Libya and served there for numerous years and it only did him good.
Bring it back :)

i think it's stupid. we'd most likely be sent to iraq, fighting the war for oil. thousands more young adults would die as a result of the government's greed.

looks like it.
In that case, I think it's a crap idea.

Yep we'd all be sent to war... Probably with either Iraq if that crisis is still on, Afganistan or any future conflicts which may arise. I know where they're coming from when they say they want to enforce some sort of power on the rebellious youths of the 21st century, but there are alot of good people out there. Not everyone is bad, it's just the bloody adults.
I find this unfair if you've done nothing wrong, if they send me I'll refuse.
It's tight!

True. -.- It's not the salvation for everyone I guess, however it's the freakin crap government who make the rules. They've screwed up enough already so this'd take the biscuit. I just thought for all the habbo addicts... Would they have interwebs?!

I'd be happy with, you either do National Service or go to University? If you choose to do neither you get just get forced to do National Service. And don't say people can't afford to go to University, you can get loans which only start paying off when your in a highly paid job.

It should be for people who have drug/ASBO offences, then I would support it fully as it does work whether you agree with it or not.

only the people who have a criminal record should go, the more serious their record the longer they should do it, and records as serious as murder then they should be kept in prison and tortured :)

It won't happen. Due to the human rights act you can't actually force anybody to do anything.

Also you wouldn't be sent to conflict in National Service, and even if we had to which we wouldn't, I would refuse to go and kill innocent iraqis.

they managed to in WWI?
at first it was optional then they made it compulsory

Exactly. But in my view, it should be brought in, but, like others have said, only to those with criminal records. If it did come into force, then I think it would act more as a deterrent, a bit like capital punishment.

Actually i'd rather go to prison and have a clear conscience rather than being dead or having to kill innocent people.

That doesn't really make sense, you're saying they're considering bringing it back to dicipline all the teenagers... they'll be mature adults by the time they get there.

at first it was optional then they made it compulsoryThey had the choice of prison as well, indeed it is a 'No win' situation but you do have one choice. In them days you'd be classed a coward in your community if you didn't go to war.
