View Full Version : Little bit of a question about the swear filter

There was a thread made a few weeks ago asking why shiz/shizzle isn't filtered and the reason behind it was it's used alot in modern day language. Now one problem with the word filter is that there are a few words which are less rude and have been used in modern day language for a very, very long time. Way before shiz/shizzle.

The following words are filtered, and I wish to know why, because they're NOT rude and can't be used in a rude way at all, without the member looking completely stupid.

dick - ****
piss - ****
pissing - *******
pissed - ******

It seems stupid having them filtered, when shiz which sounds alot like the 4 letter shi word ending with t isn't filtered when words which aren't rude or inappropriate are. Afterall, if they are used inappropriately, surely a moderator can deal with it? This is of course, that you've hired the right moderators that don't close threads/ban members/remove posts on instinct

I guess this is true for the last 3 words, although I think the first can still be used offensively.

Can you honestly take offense from someone calling you a **** head? Most people will just laugh at their attempts to be rude. All words can be used offensively, it's just whether or not you take offense and in this day in age, that word isn't at all rude. The people offending that member for using **** head as an insult would be the ones being rude :P

**** is a name, it's unfair filtering **** because someone might be called ****.

GommeInc

Then you call them Richard, but there are a few famous ***** :P

If these words are filtered, then surely shiz/shizzle should be, for exisiting through an even worse swear word?

Why are you actually trying to get it filtered?

I see where you're coming from and I do agree. I don't think they should be filtered, or maybe even a hack created to turn the filter on and off for your preference.

I'm not, they're harmless words too, much like the 2 I suggested (plus their add-ons).

It'll be easier to remove them from the filter, than to get a hack.

the first one is more of an offensive word, and slang for Penis. But the others should be unfiltered.

As someone said, it's penis which is unfiltered. And wee isn't filtered, nor is drunk which are both words which gave birth to the the four letter p word.

Well any people called **** will have to change their name - could be a discrimation case there. Equal rights for all people called ****! Anyway I don't think that word is particuarly offensive. It you call somebody a **** head and it is offensive then they can be warned under the rudeness rule rather than the filter rule. After all we can say penis, tool, mans best friend (:P) - can't see that any worse although these can be used in a vulgar way which could be seen as inappropriate and there is a rule to cover that too.

I do not like the other word though that Gommel cites - I do find it pretty vulgar and quite offensive. But that's just my opinion and personal preference.

Would you even need to filter it? Anyone that calls someone a **** head and are serious will just be made a laughing stock. Although, that maybe a reason for blocking it so that members don't use any other offensive words to make fun of said member.

I see both sides of the argument and am quite undecided about the whole situation. While I would laugh if someone called me a **** head for their lack of insults, but I think the word is offensive to some people.

Same for **** and it's variations, while I use it on a regular basis, some people don't like it. But I also think that shiz is the same, I only use shiz to stop myself from saying ****.

So I don't know how this would go about, lucky for me it's not my job to decide :)

You said it yourself, some people may not like it. The majority should get what they want unless there is some deep, historical reason for it to be filtered e.g. Hitler and anything related. For some people, the very mention of Hitler makes people angry. Besides, if you don't like a word, take a lesson from real life and that would be to simply ignore it.

At Mentor:

And if you say "I ****** up someones leg" wouldn't you be considered a laughing stock? Besides, that's not offensive, maybe inappropriate but loads of things are.

And you just rubbed salt into whoever's job it is to deal with it, Joshuar :P

That's very true - you don't have to use them and whilst I find the word you mention first quite vulgar I am probably in a minority. Mentor is right it couldn't really be used in an insulting way at all.

And if somebody does use them in an offensive way then they get an infraction. Because I think you'll get a couple of goons abusing the fact they can say them words however many people will not use them offensively. Although it's pathetic when they use them offensively. ;)

Piss has been unfiltered. The other words will remain filtered. We have also unfiltered *****(s).

Any of these words used in an insulting way towards members, will as usual be an infractional offense.

****, pissed and pissing are filtered? Piss is the cause of all things pissing and pissed!

How is **** offensive/insulting? **** is less harmless than penis! "Suck my ****" and "suck my penis" both mean the same thing, yet penis is more exact while **** is just, well laughable... Out of the words piss and ****, **** is less rude

Some people have put them in their signatures which looks really immature but hopefully the novelty will wear off soon.

Gommel I agree I find the word you are talking about a lot less offensive than
piss or ***** which I personally do ( I know in the minority:) )

Indeed, they'll get bored after a month (unless they forget to change their signatures :P) ***** is very rude compared to ****. Not sure who thought it was rude, I would like to see why it's not been unfiltered.

Yes, but you can say "he's a *****," which is ruder than "he's a dick" which in social terms is ruder.

So why can't the 4 letter word which loads would associate with penis then be edited by a moderator as offensive when it is used offensively? There's not been any clear thought put into unfiltering the word by the looks of it.

the only non-offensive way to use that is to describe a type of pudding, something which not many people do really.

i was against unfiltering piss but moreso ***** as theres only one way that can be used in a non-abusive manner.

I don't even know a none-abusive away of saying ***** :P **** is less abusive anyway, and you can use it to talk about a penis... It's not exactly rude.

I don't really see a problem with the filter. It's better having it, then not having it. Arguments would seem even more rude if certain words were unfiltered, that would just cause more trouble. There is no real need to use them words.

Penis isn't really rude as it is the scientific word. The other words are more for insults so they will remain filtered.

I believe the word ***** is more insulting and used more insultingly than the 4 letter word for penis... If you use the shortened version of Richard to someone you're normally laughed upon and looked at as childish or immature :P
