I am someone who unfortunately suffers from epilepsy, so I have to be careful what websites I go on, but as I was browsing the forum I saw Iascend's and it started to make my head hurt alot. If it was any more flashy, it could have been worse. So I think flashing sigs like that should be banned from use.

I like the selfish and damn right rude posts coming from aload of these members. He has every right to browse the forum, as does everyone else so stop telling him to go offline. Flashing signatures aren't really needed nor do they appeal to anyone, so if they are reported they are probably safer removed anyway.

I find it pathetic though. Every member on this forum find something little to complain about.

It's imagery. If it's annoying you, Private message the member and ask im politely to remove it. If not, ignore him.

Bringing out a rule for this would be difficult as that rule would be hard to follow. Plus it would be over the top a little.

To keep the masses happy, there is an option which you yourself can do to disable all signatures.

Go to "User CP" > "Edit Options" > "Thread display options" > "Visible Post Elements" then disable Signatures, and possibly avatars, since some people do put flashing images in there also.

I hope this resolves the situation for everyone ;)

gommeinc, i have a right to post my view on the subject and as such i was pointing out a perfectly relevant point that makes sense. all i was saying was that complaining about that signature is exactly the same as going to a house at christmas for over doing it. but no, he would complain about a signature because its not in person. i know a house near me that could cause many epileptic fits but no-one does anything about it.

unless he has gone to a house and complained i see no reason why that signature must be removed. as far as i am aware, there are no rules for that signature and also it looks the same as a fairy light flashing on and off

(if it was not you that -repped me then this goes to whoever put your name at the end and everyone else)
also, i didnt know there was an option to disable sigs but that can also be the option

GommeInc
27-01-2008, 12:23 AM
What if he doesn't want to disable signatures? There could be a rule on it, afterall, loads of people do suffer from it and it's common courtesy not to have flashing imagery on the website (unless there is a warning).

1. Christmas lights don't cause epileptic fits... The speed isn't adjusted to do so and small flickers of light such from Christmas lights rarely do cause fits.
2. If the people at the house invited someone they knew had epileptic fits, they would of turned them off before hand, tis common courtesy.
3. I don't believe patronising members is considered kind and considerate

I guess the other option would be to simply look away. That's what a few people I know do when they see anything that sparks a headache (and there onwards a fit), but on a forum are they really needed?

I know, it's not an ideal situation for anyone here.

The only possible solution I could keep for everyone (so, he could keep signatures on show and people could have flashing in their signature) is to have flashing signatures in spoilers?

& thanks @xP :)

yeh but your missing the point, the option is there for signatures to not appear which would remove the problem. its also lascends right to have the image in his sig as long as it is not breaking any rules.
signatures dont really bring about anything else other than a picture and writing so there is no need for them so there is no reason why he cant disable them

Its not a big problem, why do people make small issues seem like such major problems.

No, your right he might not want to disable all signatures but why should people who don't have epilepsy not be allowed to have flashing images? There's nothing wrong with a bit of animation in the signature/avatar, hell halve of people on here have it. If its majorly flashing its still not a problem, just scroll down and ignore it.

It's a problem to him so he should just disable signatures or block the image if he uses Firefox, just because of his problem the whole forum shouldn't suffer and disable flashing images. He can't expect every website he goes on to be suitable to his needs.

Sorry for causing a problem Iascend, I've decided to disable signatures anyway just incase there are any signatures worse than yours. And yes the flashing lights on ambulances and police cars can be bad too but I don't stand right infront of them and stare into them or I would have an injury. I try to look away and keep a distance.
The same could be applied for your signature I guess, just it caused me a bit of discomfort.

But it's different and depends on the person, I suppose. I myself don't have epilepsy so I don't know exsactly but I'd say it's different as the lights are irl and the forum image is pixels, which would probably more annoying, depending on the image.

At least you were good enough to remove it, good move. ;)

I'm not saying it SHOULD have been removed, I was just saying about the police lights and how it may be different. As I said, nice of you to remove the signature.

As it's been said, it's not against the rules to have animated signatures of any kind (providing the signature isn't inappropriatley explicit). It appears that he has taken the issue into consideration and removed the signature for you. Since there is no rule against this specifically at this current time, then there isn't anything that can be done about it. His signature is completely appropriate for the forum and if he wishes to have it in his signature again, there is nothing stopping him from doing so. :)

As a possible solution, that i expect will be useful even when browsing other sites, you can simply disable image animations on websites completely.
The easiest way for now is to simply get firefox, install the "web developers tool bar" (http://chrispederick.com/work/web-developer/)
then select images -> disable images -> Image Animations.

That should solve most gif animation problems while still letting you view normal images on the forums.

Wow. Harsh. Way to be accomadating of other members. Would you say to someone in a wheelchair, if you're disabled or whatever, just get out of school, or don't come in this building, because you'd have to build a wheelchair ramp?

Anyway, on the issue at hand, IMO the slightly flashing things are ok, things that flash more (like lAscend's, even without epilepsy I can see it is about extreme flashing) should be allowed, but treated as lAscend did, put in a spoiler with a warning. That way people can enjoy it if they wanna without inconveniencing epileptics.

Your signature is breaking a rule.

Limit the size of the pictures in your signature - VIP members are allowed to have as many pictures as they want in their signature, as long as they are below each other, each picture is not wider than 700 pixels, and the total height of all pictures together is not more than 300 pixels.

Yours is 800 x 600. You are only aloud 700 x 300.
