THE SUN NEVER LIES WHOOO :P
WE could soon be visited by TIME TRAVELLERS — thanks to a £2billion machine able to punch a HOLE in the universe.
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00431/SNN0714GX1280_431832a.jpg
The atom-smasher may open up a time tunnel for people from the future to travel back to now.
The particle accelerator, called the Large Hadron Collider, has been designed to explore the origins of the universe by investigating the tiniest components of atoms.
It is due to be switched on in May.
http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00431/snn0714c180_431833a.jpg
Big Bang boffin ... Dr Volovich
It will accelerate particles to the speed of light — then smash them together to recreate conditions from the first fraction of a second after the Big Bang, which created the universe.
But each particle — a trillionth the size of a mosquito — will create a shockwave distorting time and space around it.
And Russian mathematicians Igor Volovich and Irina Aref’eva say this may tear the fabric of the universe and result in a “wormhole” linking our time with the future.
Phantom
The laws of physics suggest that no one from the future will be able to travel back any further than when the machine was switched on — with 2008 being Year Zero.
Dr Volovich, of the Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow, reckons future technology may be advanced enough to send someone back through the time tunnel.
He told the magazine New Scientist: “If a combination of fast-moving particles and phantom energy does create a wormhole, an advanced civilisation could find it in their history books, pinpoint the moment — and take advantage of their technology to pay us a visit.”
And some boffins think it may be possible for people of our time to travel years ahead — like TV Timelord Doctor Who.
The machine is based in a vast underground laboratory at the CERN particle physics centre in Geneva, Switzerland

Yes theoreticly (sp?) but so far we haven't actually done it :P
the only problem is by literally ripping a whole in the universe, we could be doomeed lol
still, i dont hitnk it would be possible because by the time the technology is available, i think well all be dead. not to sound too much of a pessimist

You would only be able to go forwards into the future and not return and you wouldnt be able to go into the past. Time travel is possible anyway, if design a rocket and fly at say... 1,000,000 mph for what seems like 1 year to you then return to earth something like 1000 years on earth will have passed as time slows down the faster you go

not if it works like back to the future where when you change the past you change the future so the future you came from no longer exists urrg confusing :D
so surely the alien wouldnt exist so hed disappear lol
either way confusing
its extremely unlikely you will ever eb ablke to go 1,000,000 mph

It is not possible to make anything with mass travel at the speed of light. They gan get to like 99.9% of it though. I don't believe that travelling backwards in time is possible, but travelling forwards definately is by moveing at extremely high speeds - it has been proven by astronaughts who have travelled a few seconds forward in time over several months in space.

I see how Time Travel works.
Say for example you go back in time and impregnate your hot cousin, or your hot cousins mentally handicapped friend.
When you go back to the future, things would have changed, like you'd be married to your hot cousin/hot cousins mentally handicapped friend.
Cool :D
I think seeing a glimpse of the future may be the wrong thing to do. We could see that we, as a community have destroyed the earth due to some factor we don't know yet, we could find out there's no world left, or perhaps a close friend has died as a result of you.

I'd go back to the past, back before Dec. 5th, 2005, before my girlfriend at the time passed away from brain cancer when she was 18, just to see her one last time before she died and tell her how much I love her.....I never got to say goodbye or i love you because I was gonna go see her on the 5th, the day she died, but I found out she died, so yeh.......

The machine isn't a time machine it is supposed to create a worm hole in the universe so people from the future with better technology will be able to come back to us! They are hoping a record will be kept of this machine so in a thousand years or whatever they will know the date the machine is turned on and be able to travel between now and then.. but like I said that's what it's supposed to do it could just blow a fuse or something.. :D
When the machine is turned on you can't go back before the time it was switched on. (Day 0) but you could go back to the exact moment it was switched on but not before.
The bit that worries me is when they switch it on, because you don't know what its capable of. Also the guy said people from the future could visit us - but they might be some nut jobs who have some super destructive weapons and kill us all therefore no future?

How can you go back in time to a time that's already happened from a time that hasn't happened? That doesn't even deserve to be called a theory.
You cannot go into the future because it has not happened yet.
How do you know?
What I think is that we've all been here before like If I kicked my door now I'd do it again in "another" life. When we die I belive were born in to the exact same life without knowing (obviously) If you've ever saw the film DeJa Vu it would make more sence. So to sumarise I simply think we repeat it self over and over... so yeah this is the future as well as the past.

the back hole thing hasnt happened yet. scientists are planning on trying to create the conditions of a black hole within a labratory in the us (If eveything goes wrong it could mean the earth being consumed by a black hole :D then everything around earth)
I've been fascinated with time travel for years and done alot of research. theoretically it is possible but it will need an extreme amount of power and if there was a power cut while it had been running for somewhat 10 years the wormhole would close meaning point zero would be destroyed and anything happening from future to past the 10 years before the power went out would be lost

theory suggests time is continuous so by making a worm hole you could bend time to go forward. No one really knows if it is possible or not. It is theoretically possible but it hasn't yet been practised.
a simple example of how it could work:
A piece of A4 paper (this will be time). Make it so there is a ditch in the middle and two ledges either side of the ditch. The wormhole effect would theoretically bring the two ledges together without touching the ditch. and in this example going further along the paper in a shorter amount of time therefore timetravel.

I don't care what these idiots think, it's not possible, it doesn't matter how fast you make something go time stays EXACTLY the same, you could build a ship that travels 1 million miles per hour, circles to earth for 1 million miles and come back and everything will be exactly the same just 1 hour later because you've been in the ship for an hour, you've still aged an hour so it's not possible and never will be possible

Virgin Mary

So what they're saying is that time records itself and there is a timeline beginning every microsecond? And that basically everything that will happen is predestined, so effectively there is no point in life because we technically never die if there's always one of us in the past.
Besides this is nothing new, I could travel through time right now if I wanted. If I travelled to America I could be 8 hours in the past, if I travelled to Australia I'd be 10 hours in the future.

You'd be an hour older, but time around you would, in theory be an hour and a few seconds older, beaning you travelled a few seconds forward in time.
They want to recreate the effect after it happened to understand our universe.

It is possible in many ways really. Since Einstein, everyone has been racing to create the first ever "time machine". The two closest people to actually creating once, is this guy and that other guy who wanted to save his dad or something.
But this so called time machine is not safe whatsoever. When it turns on there is a chance it can create a black hole and destroy Earth and more, as it works the same way a black hole works.

Oh yeah dudes I didn't read the thingy correctly it says
It will accelerate particles to the speed of light — then smash them together to recreate conditions from the first fraction of a second after the Big Bang, which created the universe.
so I guess that means it won't re create the big ban so meh...
Even if Time Travel was possible, who ever finds a way will most probably be murdered by the government like any other thing which would stop them from making money.

it makes sense if you have actually researched and actually understand physics
and bio. your right the man who wanted to save his dad wanted to create a series of lazers which when in motion would take light atoms through
Theoretically it would create a black hole, through which you can get to the future because time slows down when you approach the event horizon because of the strength of the gravity. Only thing is that whatever enters a black hole instantly becomes a singularity, which obviously poses as a problem.
Furthermore this "time travel" is relative to time beyond the gravity of the black hole, all it means is that time, therefore your age, slows down, not that you're instantly transported to the future. So his idea that it would rip a hole in space and time and allow someone to travel back is stupid. It's the same principle behind people freezing themselves in hope they'll be woken up in the future without their bodies having been changed.

we wouldn't have people from the future here if time travel was possible because in order for them to come to us a time machine would have to exhist and since it doesn't future people cannot come to our time.

a black hole and a worm hole (time travel occurs in worm holes) are completely different. I've just been reading wiki. its quite interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time#Time_as_.22unreal.22

The big bang couldn't have been created by an exploding star because the big bang created all stars?
And time travel isn't possible and never will be, otherwise we'd have people from the future here in the present day.
If I have to say this one more time I think I'm going to go mad ....
We haven't had anyone travel back yet because this guys machine hasn't been switched on yet this machine is supposed to open a worm hole not a black hole in the universe where people from the future who have better technology will be able to travel back to us as his machine won't be turned on until may 2008 no people would not have come back yet.. we'll have to wait until may to see if that happens May 2008 will be day 0 according to this guy they won't be able to travel back before day 0 urrg..
Edit: I'm not argueing this point as I think its going to work I just saying it'll be interesting to see what happens and I fully repsect those who have come in and debated there point of view with evidence but it just annoys me when people come in and say 'it won't work blerrg' and haven't even read the article....

what would be funny is if the experiment succeeds and someone comes through the moment its turned on then everyone who was like noooo will be eating their words

Well, you think that someone in the future would have done something similar to make them go into the past by themselves considering they'll have better technology.
But I won't start going on, I haven't a clue what I'm on about ^^ In my opinion it won't work as there isn't a physical future :)

Nice opinion :). but the only way to get back would to be having a time machine in the present which means its impossible for them to come :D

I get what you're saying, it's just what that person is saying is pretty much a guess. Supposedly there have been lots of wormholes already, but none of them are large enough to travel through and don't last long becuase they need to be held open, also to create one big enough just to let a few atoms through requires an enormous amount of mass - that's where his guess falls through.

that is in fact a very good arguement =] But I think there'd have to be a machine on this end or something but like you I'm not much of a physics wizz so meh.

yes according to physics wormholes open and close all the time, i agree to create a wormhole you would need an enormous amount of energy and mas but that can be equalled to by speed (theoretically)

Well hopefully it will work, I don't think it will but that doesn't mean i don't want it to. It's just I feel sometimes these people take things to the point where it's just pseudo-science.

thats the only bad thing about this subject. some things arent clear and are mixed with fiction. i hope it is possible just because we could learn so much
as much as i want to beleive this, tbh i cant.. and yeah, its so annoying when people r like
"OMGZ U LYIN CUS DER NO1 FROM FUTURE" ... its just like is it that hard to understand that
theres no machine atm so they cant come to the machine.. its only from when its on you can go back to.. fgs.

Well think about this.
When its switched on, and say it is expected to stay switched on for a year, everyone in that year who is going into it at the same time, would all come through as soon as it is switched on, because everyone from each time period is going through it.
Think like that, and you know it couldn't be possible.

I'm confused by what you mean? lol If I've understood correctly you mean if more than one person comes through at once from diffrent times in the future it wouldn't work.
Well surely they'd keep a record of whos travelled back when so in the future they'd know to come back at 12.01 instead of 12.00 =P Maybe they'd also only need to make the one trip I mean 2008 isn't that interesting =]

Okay look, lets just do it with 2 people for example.
The machine brings you back to when it was turned on.
Say it was turned on on monday.
Someone went in it on tuesday.
Someone else went in it on wednesday.
They would both come out on monday, when it was switched on.
So they would come out at the same time.

Matter can not overlap another matter.
Even if it was possible, you would die by being merged with everything else that goes through.

but that still leaves possibility for the worm hole to work anyway no one knows that it wont work. then again that could most likely be true and by creating the wormhole we completely destroy earth.

I just want to go back in time and slap certain people I know's (no-one on this forum) mothers for giving birth to said people.
I'd also like to do the following:
- Go back and punch Britney Spears in the mouth, thus ending her singing career before it begins, than crashes and burns.
- Punch Paris Hilton for not releasing a sex tape sooner.
- Do what Stewie did on Family Guy and punch Will Ferrel for being in Bewitched, but congratulate him for A Night At The Roxbury
- Crap on the hood of Simon Cowells car, but wipe my butt and leave the toilet paper stuck to his windshield so he knows a human did it xD

That whole list sounds pretty appealing to me! Especially Paris Hilton haha, she may just look prettier. This time machine idea will be intrieguing I must say.

Who cares if it creates a black hole, we'll all be dead faster than the speed of light and nothing would matter.
