I'm 17 at the end of June

but i was wondering; do I have to send off for something before I can learn to drive?

and can I do the Theory while im 16; and if so how long does it hold for


its all so confusing lols

you need your provisional license first of all.

you can do your theory once you have that, but its best to have lessons first. you learn as you go along.

you'll need a provisional for lessons, adn if you want to go out in your parents cars you'll need L paltes, insurance on the car and a person over 21 who's held a license for over 3(?) years in the car with you at all times :)

I don't know if any of the rules are different in Northern Ireland, but once you pass your theory in the UK, you must pass your practical within 2 years of passing your theory.

Not sure. I think you need your provisional license to sit yout theory test, and you can't get that until you are 17. You can start studying for it though, if you want to get it out of the way.

Personally I think it's better to do theory alongside your practical lessons because you see where things actually come into your driving rather than just learning them from a book and not really knowing much about the situations. Having the experience of situations makes theory and hazard perception more simple.

Its better to have like.. 12 lessons throughought 2 weeks, rather than having 2 lessons a week over a period of a few months, because when youre doing it over and over and over again, it gets into your head more and you WILL remember it and find it more easier. Because if you learn something then a week later you will forget it..

So yeah, have loads and loads of lessons one after the other and book your test straight after

This may work for some people, for others its not. It also depends on the financial situation you are in with how many lessons you have a week.

I find 2 hour lessons work out alot better for me personally, you get alot more time to learn and get a wider experience whilst out without feeling as soon as uve got in your car your lesson is going to end soon. I've had one 2 hour lesson per week since November and have had about 22 hours of lessons now, have passed my theory, learnt all the manouvers and i am due to book my test very soon.

You cannot sit any kind of test before you are 17 years of age and hold a UK provisional driving license. You can however apply for your license up to 3 months before your 17th birthday, and book your theory on your 17th birthday and go sit it if you wish, however i wouldn't recommend this.

That is correct, you have 2 years from the date you pass your theory to pass your practical test otherwise you have to re-pass your theory test in order to be able to re-sit the practical test.

Me personally i would recommend getting a good, reliable ADI who you are comfortable with and you think is proggressing your learning at a good pace and is not holding you back for the money aspect. Then once uve had good practice with a study aid for the theory (I'd recommend the Driving Test Success DVD's) and once ur confident book ur theory and don't get off that study aid till the test. I found i did it this way and i was eager like you, now i am content and i am going to be adding a extra hour into my lessons before my test.

you can order it up to 3 months (I think) before your 16th, as you would be able to use it for mopeds. I ordered mine early in case the law came in that you can't drive until you're 18.
