View Full Version : I think I might have a fatal disease...

I'm scared. Really scared. I can't think about anything else. My father had a disease called 'ALS' or Lou Gehrig's disease. The disease is 100% fatal with no cure, and he died when I was six years old. The disease slowly paralysis you, usually starting with your hands or feet, and eventually gets to your lungs and voice box causing you to talk strangely and not being able to breath without some kind of life support.
Over the past couple of years I have been developing painful foot cramps. This especially happends when I'm swimming, but it also happends just randomly. My toes or my entire foot will cramp up and I can barely walk on it. I've been reading the symptoms and that is definitely one of them. One of the others is a shortness of breath, which I have developed for a long time now. Sometimes, I'll just be sitting down and I'll noticed myself having to breath harder. Recently, at night, I've been trying to go to sleep only to be violently woken up gasping for breath. Another symptom is tripping, which I do a lot. This could just be from being clumsy, but I notice myself in the hallway walking akwardly. If there is someone is front of me, sometimes I try to go to my left, but my foot doesn't go out far enough so I do this akward kind of pause and almost a small pivot. It's strange and slightly embarrassing.
ALS is hereditary, but hereditary ALS only accounts for abou 5-10% of ALS cases. As far as I know, my father is the only one in our family that has had ALS.
At this point I've almost assured myself I have the disease, but I know I shouldn't think this way. I'm starting to become depressed and have had trouble going to sleep. My main delima is telling someone. I know I should, but its very complicated. I'm terrified to tell my mother because I really don't want to scare her like that. She has a terrible time when our father died and I'm scared at how she would react with myself having, or potentionally having the disease. I don't want to do something drastic... she seems depressed lately. I'm just really confused and scared, and I don't want to over react. :(

Okay, that was actually helpful. Should I still tell someone though. I suppose I could just wait and see if it gets a bit more severe before scaring anyone.

I am familiar with this topic. Your brain is fine, but your body slowly looses function.
Sue Rodriguez had ALS.. but I won't get into that.
All I can say is.. if you have it.. you have it. You can't do anything about it, just live your life to the fullest and take nothing for granted.

To be perfectly honest, I really doubt anyone on this forum is medically quilified to help, im not for sure.
I reccomend going to the docs to get it sorted if you think theres something not right.
But by the sounds of it, you may have simple growing pains, but your worried that they might be this disease that you know about.
All I can say is to go to the doctors.
Good luck,
Joe.

There isn't any need to worry mate. It may be growing pains. I get cramps in my foot often. I also breathe quite heavily sometimes (maybe cos i am fat :P)
But there is nothing to worry about, just tell you Mum that you have been getting cramps in your foot. Or, tell someone like your Doctor.
Hope this is helpful and hope your ok :)

Ask her if you should get yourself checked out, it should't scare her unless you shout and rave about how you are sure you have. Don't jump to conclusions until you know for certain you have it :)
Like other people have said, go to the doctors and see what they suggest. It could just be growing up or how your body functions.

Well, I get cramp and sometimes have to breathe harder. I also get pins and needles all over my body randomly, but I think that's to do with the washing power used on my clothes. :P
If you're worried so much go to the doctors, I'm sure your mum will understand... it's better than her not knowing then one day you're gone (not being horrible or anything).
If your age is around 10-16 its normally growing up.
Ive had cramps. I had 5 weeks out of football because I couldn't walk because of cramps in my foot. Also at those ages your bones + muscles are developing which gives them more chance of getting ached and hurting.
I sometimes breathe heavily but things just like that come on for a bit.
I managed to break my toe easily in afootball game...
If your not sure go to the doctors or visit HeathBoards.com

I have all those symptoms.. Footcramps i get reguarly, shortness of breath is down to my asthma and i always fall over. You shouldn't just assume you have it, talk to your mum and get her to take you to the GP who from there can refer you to a specialist if needs be

These things could just be a coincedence, and since you read about the symptoms you may be starting to imagaine them to be worse than they are, if you get me.
Hereditary cases are vary rare i think
* Just googled it and it occurs 5-10% of the time, so its not that much of a risk
Have a think about it then go to your GP, if you dont want to scare your mum you could just make up any old excuse, then go on your own, or bring a friend.

Go to a doctor. You'll just keep worrying about it if you don't... It's the only way to know for sure.

Maybe you should go to the doctor's and get it checked out. Just in case. Even if it isn't it, it's good to be sure.

If I keep getting these cramps, I'll tell her soon. These aren't growing cramps though. These feel... weird.
Thanks for the help everyone.
I'm sure if you had got this disease, the last doctor appointment you had most doctors notice things randomly.
Also wouldn't you be feeling ill really aching NON-STOP. I'm sure there would of been earla signs if you had and people would of noticed. But ask HealthBoards.com their some professionals on their. I use it if I have a health question.
And visit your doctor when possible just for a check up. I'll bet he'll say your just growing up and its growing pains just take some neurofen or paracetemol and rest.
Also I sometimes worry about fatal diseases and start to shake and get worried. You should put something on tv you like and just forget it.

No need for that really , if I were you i would go get it checked out with your local GP , its probably just growing pains , but only when u find out for sure will u stop worrying.
Most definately, tell your mum you've been getting foot cramp and sometimes can't breath properly. Your mum may start by taking you to the doctors and it will carry on from there, all I can say from here is I wish you the best of luck with whatever happens! :(:)

Theres most probably nothing wrong with you.
I get foot cramp alot when i swim.
Also someone told me once that i walked like a **** and i got really paranoid, i thought that i walked weirdly,, i dont and people have told me i dont. I was paranoid, thats all so i thought that i did when i didnt.
I think you may have some paranoia about these things.
I hope i have helped,
GO to the doctors without telling your mum.

See someone if you are extremely worried :) None of us are doctors here; but i do have a certificate in First Aid. That's about as qualified as any of us will get :P Unless there is a medical student on here!
But anyway, see a doctor if youre that worried :) Keep us posted!
I just read about it. And it doesnt hit kids.. Well wikipedia said it hits people down to the age of around 30 years old.. Mostly hits people over 50..
And its not heritable..
