850px-950px width
1024 x 768 is now the most widely used screen resolution, so anything below that will fit on one page with no scroll. However there are still resolutions such as 800 x 600 which people still use.

What you said kind of defeats what he's asking... he wants to know what's a good starting size so it would/will work/fit any browser and resolution...
I always start on a blank document with a size of 800x600 and work from there. I do this so that even the smaller screen resolutions can still use the sites I design. I am also tend to use %'s when actually coding the sites so that it will work for larger and smaller screens.
