A holiday flight from Manchester to Cyprus was forced to divert to Turkey after the co-pilot collapsed and died during the journey. The GB Airways Airbus A320, with 156 passengers on board, was bound for Paphos but diverted to Istanbul on Sunday afternoon.
Passengers spent the night in Istanbul and are to be flown to Cyprus later.
An airline spokeswoman said that at no time was the plane, passengers or crew in any danger.
'Medical emergency'
"GB Airways confirms that yesterday's flight BA 6826 from Manchester to Paphos diverted to Istanbul due to a medical emergency on the flight deck," the spokeswoman said.
"On landing, it was confirmed that the first officer (co-pilot) had died during the flight. At no time was the aircraft, passengers or crew in any danger.
"The first officer's next of kin have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family following this tragic news."

Wow, what are the chances :O.

This is one reson why planes have 2 pilots. If it wasn't the case, those passengers could have all died unless auto pilot was on.

Autopilot can do everything ;). That doesn't mean we don't need pilots - far from that.

Yeah, AutoLand is the AutoPilot feature that allows you to land an aircraft. AutoPilot is very comprehensive, but you cannot take off using it.

RIP To the Officer.

This may be a bad question, but if he died in the plane, which country would be the Place Of Death, would it be the country they were flying over / country of plane etc?

RIP To the Officer.

This may be a bad question, but if he died in the plane, which country would be the Place Of Death, would it be the country they were flying over / country of plane etc? That's a really good question to be honest. If he was in international air-space which most of the Mediterranean sea is then I'm really stumped. He could well of died in international air-space as well, cause he was pronounced dead on arrival by the Turkish authorities.

+rep for the question
