"British earthquakes have killed 11 people since 1580. Six were killed by falling stones, two fell from upper floors, two died of shock and one committed suicide.

The country experiences a magnitude 5 earthquake on average every ten years. A magnitude 4 earthquake occurs on average every two to three years. "

LOL at the one who commited suicide, I don't really think that can be counted in the earthquake fatality statistics.

So yeah kids, I don't think we're gonna die, looking at the figures. :)

One of them geologist, is on Sky News and has said the epicentre is close to the surface and is 15 miles north of Lincoln.

It has been felt from Greater London to North Yorks and has also been felt in Wales.

AfterShocks could occur, none have been registered yet and people are to stay on the look out.

no injuries reported and damage confined to a few chimneys falling off

:x I felt it.

Considering I've never experienced an earthquake at night (then again, it's the biggest one I've even felt...) I hadn't a clue what was going on. Waking up (well, opening my eyes... just came back from my bathroom...) to a massive bang, a roar than violent shaking... Sheesh. Got up, looked outside my bedroom, realised a train hadn't crashed into my street and went downstairs...

Meh, I hadn't a clue what ws going on.

measured 5.3 on rictor scale, which is quite bad taken from wikipedia:

Moderate - Can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions. At most slight damage to well-designed buildings.

Earthquake was said to be again caused by global warming...
They said on Sky News and BBC news that heat caused the plates to move apart and then back together causing the earthquake.

As you know UK doe's not collide with any other plates.

jesus
27-02-2008, 03:51 PM
I wouldn't blame global warming for that, earthquakes happen all over the world more regularly than England. They're probably just saying it's that to promote a 'cleaner environment' like they are with most other things.

Dunno if this has already been said as I cba to read the thread...

On the news they said it was the biggest one in britains history. 5.2 on the richter scale or something similar.

It really baffles people why we are the country that has the most earthquakes when we aren't even on the edge of a plate.

efq
27-02-2008, 04:20 PM
yeh. we arn't supposed to collide into other plates as most geologists show UK with no plates colliding... So it has to be a plate splitting and then going back together.. I don't know if the after shock has came yet? Anyway BBC showed a video of kids playing the WII at 1am and the earthquake happerned and you could hear glass smashing and they lost signal on the tv.

Right, stress can still occur under the Earth's crust causing Earthquakes, it's just more common for it to be plates colliding/pulling apart :)

Global warming is in now way responsible

And it isn't the biggest in history, that was 6.1 off the coast of Great Yarmouth.

eh? I thought it was caused by the plates rubbin against each other or something

Britain is in the middle of the Eurasian plate, nowhere near and plate boundaries. There is a quite big fault line or crack under us though.

I'd be more worried about window cleaners, the guy came today- and it's only a flimsy thing, they'd be flying off em like hell if the quake happened in the day

It was felt in Holland so you shouldn't be surprised :D!

Quote from BBC:

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said it had received reports of people having felt the tremor from as far as Bangor in Northern Ireland, Haarlem in Holland, Plymouth and Edinburgh.

So when it gives way again another after shock?

They said scotland slid under linconsire or summet making the south of UK slide upwards. So we are now a few CM's up in the air and scotland are few below :DDD when the plates slide out scotland will again rule us :(

So more aftershocks?

that isn't necessarily true. eg, someone on the top floor on the hotel would have it worse if an earthquake struck than someone towards the bottom.
