selfharming is addictive.
whether people do it for attention or not.
im guessing your friend doesnt do it for attention.
considering she has depression, its probably her outlet to deal with things.
if you want her to get help, tell her.
its hard quitting an addiction, takes time, people relapse, and people slip up, but give her all the support she needs.
if she doesnt feel she is ready to stop, then dont push her to stop.
just be there for her and let her know you care and that you are there whenever she needs you.
Thats really helped thanks i have +repped :)

seriously? Ive never heard of addictive hurt before... wow. i get what you mean with an outlet for dealing with things, because i once resorted to it when i got so bad. I guess all you can do though, is just support her.

Self harming/slitting is stupid. Not only is it ugly and it makes you look like a total freak, its would be messy too. Its like spilling milk on the floor just so you can clean it up. I have had my fair-share of heartache and pain and I am not all sad and depressed and cutting. Cutting is a sad attempt for attention, nothing more, nothing less.

obviously youre one of the close minded people.
and yes, it is addictive.
hurt is addictive when its possibly the only thing keeping you from going crazy.

It just seems completely bizarre that people inflict pain on themselves to get rid of pain? ;sSSSSs
it's like YOUR LIFE REALLY ISN'T THAT BAD. TRY LIVING IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.

Incorrect. People hate themselves enough to do it and if they don't tell other people then it's obviously not for attention. This girl at my school had been doing it for ages but I didn't know until I saw marks on her wrists.

Its nothing to do with having a oh so horrible life.
Its a coping mechnism.
Physical pain overrides the emotional pain.
No matter how much a persons life can seem so good, thats not always the story.
Just because they dont live in a country with no food or shelter, doesnt mean they have the best of lives.
They could have suffered from alot of abuse as a young child, or have been raped.
Thats alot to go through.
Keep an open mind, jeez.
Or dont, whatever.

I know somebody in my life who slit themsleves. He was my best mate at one point, it was mostly to do relationship problems but then he said his mum was ill, nobody knows if she is, abd then he was told he had high blood pressure (he is 14 now i think). He used to talk about suicide alot and always slit himslef but in the end people realised he was doing it for attention, he used to make such a big deal out of it. All my mates stuck by him the whole time helping him out and once we realised he was doing it for attention we just left him to it, and he stopped goign on about it, hardly see him now, he moved to the middle of nowhere, 15 mins from where we are. He still my mate but i have no idea if he still cuts himslef, i hope not but there was nothing else we could do...
It's a shame.
But all you can to do is stick by her. Be the best friend she needs right now and just let her know you will always be there for her.
Hope all ends well:)

It's weird how self harming is so good for you. I think it's because you wanna take out your anger in violence, but the only other way you can do such is by attacking someone, so I guess you attack yourself? :S
I do wonder what goes through peoples heads to do this, but I've done it myself. can't fully remember why either.

Some people do it for attention but some people do it because it helps them deal with depression and stuff and becomes an addictive habit. People don't always cut themselves either, that's made popular by people who do do it for attention because it's one of the most noticeable ways of harming yourself.

I was once addicted to self harm, but when I got dumped back in October, I promised myself i wouldn't slit again. I have only slit once since then, compared to when i used to do it 3 or 4 times a day before.

Ohh a friend of mine who lives in America slits. He says its because he hates he life and feels that no-one ever appreciates him. He also tried to kill himself once through overdose but it didn't work.

I don't understand.. the essence of self preservation is what makes us living things.. why would you opose that?

its nothing to do with self preservation.
most people who selfharm do it secretively and do their best to hide their selfharm. some bang their heads, some scratch themselves till they bleed, some punch themselves, or bite themselves, or pull their hair out. not just cutting.
though cutting seems to be in a sterotype now. 'emo'.
which totally pees me off, merely because sterotyping is beyond pathetic, and emo is about the fashion and music taste, not about a person who selfharms.
doesnt make any sense at all.
also, selfharm can come in forms of not eating/making themselves sick/overdosing/binge drinking - all to, somewhat, feel pain or feel as if they are punishing themselves for something. not all about emotional pain. could just be to punish themselves. or, it could have started as punishment and turned into an addiction.
some people do do it for attention - regardless, them people still need help. it could turn into an attention seeking problem - to a very addictive, dangerous problem.
