View Full Version : SUPER STORM: Strongest winds for 20 years on the way

Orangez.
08-03-2008, 09:49 PM
SCOTLAND will be battered by a "super storm" early next week with ferocious winds of up to 80mph.
Widespread structural damage is expected, and Scots are being advised not to make unnecessary journeys.
Forecasters are warning that storms hitting across the UK could be the worst since October 1987. Although parts of Northern Ireland and the south west of England should bear the brunt of the extreme weather, Scotland will be badly affected.

The Met Office warned that the UK would suffer very strong, potentially damaging winds, with the Strathclyde area facing severe gales.
Tom Tobler, forecaster with Meteogroup UK, added: "The west of Scotland will not be at the centre of the storm but that doesn't mean you'll escape it.
"From around dawn on Monday there will be extremely heavy gusts of wind. They could get up to 80mph. By lunchtime it'll start to move across Northern Ireland."
Calmer conditions should return to Scotland by Monday lunchtime as gale force winds continue to tear through other parts of Britain.
Meteogroup's Gareth Harvey said: "It looks as though it is going to be strong winds just about everywhere with severe gales in some places.
"We are sure trees will be uprooted and there will be some structural damage if it's as strong as expected."
Exposed areas in the west and near the south coast have been warned to expect winds up to 80mph.
Expected to ease off during the afternoon, the high winds will return with a vengeance in the evening, when fierce gusts will hit the south west of England and Wales.
The storm is forecast to develop out of a strong jet stream which will be moving out of Canada on Saturday and crossing the Atlantic and the UK during Sunday and Monday.
Independent weather forecaster Tom Defty said: "The exact track of the storm is unlikely to be known until Sunday and the public should keep a close eye on the forecasts as severe damage is a possibility in many areas."

80 mph? I don't find nothing 'super' about that.

LOL. Skynews and Metoffice along with ITV1 and BBC have teamed up.
Since the 1987 disaster they are not taking any precautions.
In 1987 Meteorologists watching the storm fought it wasn't big and didn't give a public annoucement. The next day it was a disaster with trees uprooted, caravans tippled...

The weather teams on Sky news have said they joined up together to prevent 1987 all over again. They want to get the most accurate information to give the public warnings.
They haven't classed this as bad as 1987 but they are saying it is picking up.
The reason they joined together is so they can peice all Meteorologists data together to provide the most accurate of 99.9% of the storms course.

All last weekend I spent lifting up some pretty heavy fence panel's with my dad as the storm blew them all out of their places... Most fence panel's are light but my Dad thought these look nice, so they're so thick and heavy, despite that they still blow over :P

Lifting up heavy fence's is boring and scary, not again :'(

I've not got much to worry about. No fences, just old, strong walls and a few trees which like surviving strong winds anyway.

An additional swathe of severe westerly gales will follow through the morning and afternoon, affecting southwest England and the south coast of England. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph are likely with the possibility of 80 mph gusts on exposed coasts and hills. Disruption to transport and power supplies is possible and there may be damage to buildings and trees. In addition high waves and flooding may affect coastal areas in the south.

there you go jake :)!

Trust me, it is. There's no rain or anything yet, but the wind was strong. You should've seen the waves on the train today too, we're RIGHT UP next to the seawall, and those waves were huge. It's high tide too, so that made matters worse.

Mhmm, I live in devon alright... It's bloody awful weather, you should see the clouds here. There was blue skies this morning, and as soon as the train left (around quarter past 8), there was a huge black cloud behind the train station, and then 5 minutes later it was over the whole of the sea and everything. It's massive. I do hope that the worst goes away before half 4, because my train is then... and I don't feel like a bus replacement, or a train on a seafront which is about to collapse.

On BBC News, they've got a picture of a train getting buried by waves. No prizes for guessing who went past that today, and seen the full force... It wasn't as bad as that earlier, but yep, thats the place I went on my way to College. Dawlish it is. My town, just the next stop on the train, was getting hammered by waves too and that was on BBC News. It's the town with the pink house getting hammered completely by waves, it's so bad around there... No sea defences near there at all, there should be though.

Ohhh yes. You should've seen the most spectacular sight when going past Stoke-in-Teignhead, by that car park with the view to the ocean. There were about 20 tankers queueing up, it was like a caravan park. Simply amaaazing. Back beach got hit the hardest, since they have no flood defences and the houses are literally less than an average gardens width away, from the ocean. Shaldon bridge was singing again (A)

There was an incident in Saundersfoot, where a car was thrown into the front of a house.

Nothing around me though.

I've just moved house and my family and I were staying temporarily in a caravhat we own at a holiday park - in Selsy - the worst affected area in the UK as a result of this storm. 2000 caravans and the majority are completely destroyed; most in five feet of water. The sea has destroyed so much - everyone was evacuated last night, today we saw the true devastation of the high tides. It's carnage on site. I've been on BBC News twice in the last 24 hours being interviewed. Helicopters, news, 4x4s crashing through floods of contaminated water, gas bottle everywhere. It's a disaster area. This is the worst storm since the Great Storm of 1987, and Selsy was the site of UK's first and only recorded twister, in 2000. Everything is in ruin. I'm at my brother's place now, and will be for a couple of weeks thanks to this. Complete devastation.

Um excuse me but gusts of up to 90mph are expected in the north today.. Why isn't it plastered all over the news?

Because london isn't affected! you southerners are a bunch of bloody wimps. I luaghed when they said that the warning wigns were warning about spray on the motorway all over southern england... Those signs say the exact same thing at least once a week here in Manchester.

True, it's meant to get really bad here tomorrow. I'm right on the coast in Blackpool and we're meant to the worst of it ...

Over the past few days the storm has been crap lol. It was better in 2005 when it was that really big summer storm. me and my neighbour had to fight to keep the gazebo on the floor once the pegs were pulled out!

The storm has been terrible on the south coast. It's the single worst storm since the biggest recorded storm in UK history - The Great Storm - from 1987, which hit the south.

The north will be no where near the disaster area it has been on the south coast, although the filthy north is already one.

Hehe, it's blue skies down here, not a cloud in the sky! The wind is there, but not as strong as it was and it's actually pretty warm down here. The tides low so there's hardly ANY waves, and jesus the day looks good. :D
