The head of one of the biggest police forces in Britain has been found dead.

Michael Todd, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, disappeared while out walking in Snowdonia, north Wales, on Monday night.

Rescue teams found his body on a mountain called Bwlch Glas on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior officers said everyone within Greater Manchester Police was shocked by his death and his family had been left devastated.

Mr Todd, a former Met Police assistant commissioner, joined GMP in 2002. He also worked in Essex and Nottingham.

Reports of his disappearance emerged after a large scale search was reported in Nant Peris, above the village of Llanberis, Gwynedd.

Mountain rescue team vehicles, police and RAF mountain rescue vans were all involved in the hunt.

Mr Todd was appointed chief constable in Greater Manchester, England's second largest force, in October 2002 following the retirement of Sir David Wilmot.

He had been a police officer for more than 30 years, having joined Essex Police in 1976, and was tipped to become Britain's highest-ranking officer.

From BBC News, May him Rest In Peace.

I was just reading this. He was the man who volunteered to be tasered by the Firearms Department, just for the demonstration that they should be used for Frontline officers, as well as Firearms officers. It's a shame to see such a devoted copper be killed... No doubts though, whoever killed him definetly knew who he was. I can see it being a Manchester gang you know. Saddening though, really saddening.

My parents are both police officers, so they're going to be stunned too.

They have not said someone killed him. He was walking in mountains, but some sources say that he left notes to his family. I liked his speeches to be honest, better then the others from London.

No, I bet someone has killed him though. Someone so high-ranking would seem an ideal target for a gang of organised thugs. I know it sounds bad and everything, but I could definetly see the possibility of it. If he was so highly-publicised, I'm sure someone had survellience on him before this happened. Who was doing the watching though, well I'm not sure.

I doubt he commited suicide, which is what notes would indicate?

Yeah, unless he got into trouble and knew he couldn't get help or something, but I'm not sure. We find out soon enough :P

They wont announce much details about this, because it's one of their own. I can see them treating this as suspicious straight away though, and they won't announce anything else about it really. You just watch how fast they catch the guys who do this though, I have a feeling SOCA have a big assignment in Manchester now.

All thoughts to the family though, poor souls.

If someone did kill him, then i hope GMP get these people, I liked the guy and I also like the force when they show GMP on traffic cops etc. I like watching Manchester's' Force then the others.

The BBC has learnt the alarm was raised by walkers who found "personal affects" belonging to Mr Todd while out on the mountain.

I can see that being a struggle against a group to be honest with you. GMP will be stunned at the moment, but SOCA will be on the case instantly. I have a feeling all SOCA teams will be on high alert for the people who did it. I bet they have a good idea of who it was already, because deaths/murders like these aren't just randomly caused. Any bets on a retalliation attack from a large Manchester gang, whose leader was jailed by GMP?

There's going to be some basis behind it, and I think GMP know it. For it to happen in such a popular walking area, but still isolated from the world, means that they (being the killers, if any) wanted to grab him when he was most vunerable, and unable to call for help. There's going to be fingerprints for sure.

See, this is what happens when a guy raised by two police officers, gets investigating. :P~

EDIT: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/6956273.stm

There's one motive, which isn't too long ago... Jumping to conclusions, but that's how to solve a crime really. GOD I should so be in CEOP lol.

Some say it was suicidal, who knows? A number of letters have been found to family and friends and few days before close friends and family have had worrying phone calls, hmm.

I really couldn't help myself when seeing the thread title thinking to myself 'PLEASE BE IAN BLAIR PLEASE BE IAN BLAIR' - I cannot stand that man at all, I understand it's not nice to wish death on anyone, but I'd genuinely be pleased if he was murdered. And there's nothing wrong with having an opinion on events...

Back on subject, I remember seeing the stun gun 'stunt' and thought it was rather impressive and a point well made. I doubt something suspicious happened, RIP.

At present nothing is to state that they believe he has been murdered by anyone. As far as I know rescue attempts to get the body are or were still ongoing 2 hours ago due to the weather and it has resulted in climbers having to go down rather than any helicopter assisting.

It has shocked the force totally, I met the guy twice and he was really down to earth. The media also really liked him.

Camera crews were still outside our HQ when I left work at 9 so I assume they are doing some kind of news thing outside it on the 10'o'clock news.

Jesus, Ant's famous. :P I think he has been murdered, but right now I'm not sure how or why they would do such a thing. I guess the cameras loved the guy like you said, so they've more or less lost a public relations god of the police. It's a real shame, since he sounds a down-to-earth guy by the way people talk about him, and the way he's done things for the better. A real police officer imo.

Some say it was suicidal, who knows? A number of letters have been found to family and friends and few days before close friends and family have had worrying phone calls, hmm.

The press have published it as 'Suicide Mystery' but the second word really does give it away that they don't know the actual circumstances in which he died. Those worrying phone calls and letters may indicate he was being tracked by someone and he was that clever that he knew he was being tracked/hunted by someone. I guess they'll find out the full circumstances in a postmorteim. I thought of the perfect way to put this police force in disgrace if the killers (if any) meant business: Plant heroine into his blood. It sounds sick, especially at this time, but that would send the police hiarchy into real disrepute.

Gooch were actually the first people I expected. :P There was a raid back in August which imprisoned two leaders from Gooch, so put two and two together. There's a motive for you: Venegence. Also, on the topic of his 'suicide', notice how they haven't commented at all on how he killed himself, or with what he killed himself with. Interesting eh?

Inquest starts tommorow apparently.

:o Who said that? First I've heard, but nevertheless clever. They'll definetly check the body for traces of whisky, and if there isn't any, then the question is: Why did he have whisky by him, despite never drinking it. They'll probably have fingerprint scans all over that.

Thats a point. There'd be footprints if it was a gang, wouldnt there? Or would the torrential rain which has swept the nation, hinder that?

Now they are saying it was suicide.. that's terrible :(...

Mhmm... Well, it might just be suicide until proven otherwise. I doubt the police would like to admit one of their own high-ranking officers was murdered by a gang of thugs.

Well they've announced on the BBC Website that the man did not have a large amount of alcohol in him, so whether he was drunk or not is questionable. I guess there's alot more to this than just 'commiting suicide' like I've always been suspecting. They should definetly test the whisky bottle for fingerprints, and I would for the jacket too... In a matter of a fact, was the jacket even there?

I'm close to certain this wasn't suicide now...

They are still filming at work today because of this silly affair he was apparently having. Wish the media would just quit with all the speculation and bringing out personal information about his past, when all that needs to happen now is for his family to be left in peace, bringing up the past is just going to make them grieve and hurt more. Its stupid.

I hope the whole matter can be concluded soon so his family can be left alone and nothing else cropping up.

And in response to Ryan's post, I am 99.9% sure he wasn't murdered. We have heard that he was suffering from depression because of the above, and must have had a lot of personal stuff going on... I really feel bad for him and it's a shame he decided to commit suicide because of it. GMP won't be the same without him running it.

Yeah I agree with how the media are being pretty nosey about this. I think they're going about it in a different way, by praising him at the same time for being a 'family man' but I guess it doesn't fix anything, nor make anything better. I'm sure that if the media say that a story of him in an affair was imminent for publishing, that would explain hell of alot. I guess yeah, the police know more than the public so maybe there was more going on than whats been mentioned.

Shame he did commit suicide, but I guess the pressure would just be too hard to take.
