The last Harry Potter film will be split into two films - first part released in November 2010, the 2nd in May 2011.
Story highlights (Digg this story! (http://digg.com/movies/Deathly_Hallows_to_be_split_into_two_films)):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.
It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-et-potter13mar13,0,7162166.story). Quotage from the article:
Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.
"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."
Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

Warner Bros. are happy cus they get more dosh, Potter fans should be happy because they get a film that can be true to the book. Can you imaging Deathly Hallows in a 2 and a half hour film?! It would be impossible!

No I think it will be two films about two hours long each.

I dislike Harry Potter, and I wouldn't recommend the idea of splitting a single story into two parts. It isn't like sequential stories such as the other adaptations.

Must just be me then :(
Any who - I can see the last film knocking Titanic off its bum in terms of moneyage (not adjusted for inflation obviously). I mean just look at how well the latest film has done! And thats only the fifth. It's already the highest grossing film franchise of all time so I doubt they are doing it just for the money.
Edit@Misawa: I guess so. But if they can find a decent part of the story where they can end the film, and a decent part to pick it up again then I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem.

Not really though. I mean I can understand say Jaws 2 would just be for money. It was written specifically for screen. But it would be silly to stop a film series of adpations of a book series halfway through? Although they get lots and lots of money, you can't deny it's not for the gratification of the fans as well!

Trust me, studios greenlight films for nothing other than the potential for big cabbage, the execs couldn't care less about the gratification of the fans. The screenwriters just want to write a good film and get rich overnight, the directors want to make a good film and get a paycheck, and the producers want to find those elements to make a film that will make all that green and satisfy the studio.
I LOVE HARRY POTTERRRRRRRR.
But I Haven't Read The Last Book Yet ;[
I wanted to watch the film without having any idea of what was going to happen :P

That's like... impossible?
You still don't know who wins/loses, lives/dies?
How can you not now by now with the news and the internet :P
And yeah, it has been rumoured for numerous weeks but I think it's a good decision... Instead of being in a cinema for 5 hours, we'll have to watch two separate films.

Well to be fair, I think serious hardcore Harry Potter fans wouldn't care less if it was 2 films or just 1 five hour long one :P!

Anything above three hours won't draw theatrically. Tarantino is more of a draw than the Harry Potter when it comes to film, and Grindhouse bombed.

sounds stupid, you can watch 1 half then hav to wait 8 months for the mext film how annoying. I would rather just sit there for 4 hours or whatever and watch it all in one go. :D

Gone with the Wind was close to 4 hours and that was the highest grossing film for nearly 30 years!

Yeh, but all the actors are going to be older by then and just won't fit!

ermm, lets see ;
fred, lupin, tonks, snape, voldemort, bellatrix lestrange, dobby, colin creevy (i think) mad-eye moody, tonks dad, gregorvitch the wandmaker from dumstrang (Y)all die i'm sure theres another, oh well. :)
well, the books are better than the films in my opinion, the films miss out important parts, like the weezly's gettin the gold from harry in goblet of fire, so...yeh, :S

Most modern Bollywood films are so long they require an intermission, and are successful. :8

i disagree. tarantino definitely has his line of dedicated fans, but there are so many people connected to harry potter. i think its a much bigger event.
and the two parts thing will definitely work. the last two matrix movies came out within months of each other and both were a huge success.

Wow, it might actually be good.
Hopefully one day soon, when Daniel Radcliffe is dead, they'll hire a good actor to play Harry Potter and remake all of the films, changing and altering nothing from the books, making it a perfect representation of what the books actually are. There will be no restrictions, the films will last for hours on end and have perfect acting, fantastic casting and Rowling will write the script, direct the whole thing.
Edit: Actually, scrap the actors. It will all be entirely computer-generated (obviously in 20 years from now when 3D animation is as perfect as real life). This way the characters will be exactly how they should look, Hermione won't turn into sex goddess after realising big hair isn't hollywood-attractive, Harry will be taller than 3ft and hit puberty, and Ron won't have a face like a wet fish.

The fact that there will be 2 parts is a good thing my oppinion. Here is why: People including me are kinda sad to see both the movie and book series end. Even though the book has been read, its good to know there will in a way be 2 movies! ohhh booya =)

I actually agree with all that xD I actually saw the first four films an thought they were wicked before reading the books but after reading them you actually can see how much of the story is missing :(
The first was ok but a bit to cheesy for my likeing, the second was quite good actually, the third bored me to death, the fourth film missed Dobby out which I'll never forgive them for doing, the fifth had so many mistakes (e.g. they managed to blow a hole in the wall of the room of requirment =l) I bet they'll mess up Dumbledores Death in the next film and they soooo better not cut the funeral out because I actually shed a tear while reading that scene :( and the seventh one(s) meh I guess we'll find out :P

Instead of being Avada Kedavra'ed, he will be shot with a machine gun. Oh man, I wanna see that now.
Can anyone else saying "milking it"? xD
Seriously...They didn't care about cutting down previous books but the last one they wanna make longer and into two parts? Oh I wonder why

Because, and Im sure anyone who has read the last book will agree, the book doesn't have subplots you can remove. Its a very big plot line, its fast paced, and all the stuff in the book is relevant. If you wanted it in a 2 and a half hour film, it would be *****. They cut down the other books because it was possible to do so. If they were trying to milk it, why wouldnt they have split the other movies too?
Have you read the last book? Judging by your post I doubt you have, cus if you had you would know that its impossible to fit all of it into one decent length film.
