View Full Version : Should ***** really be unfiltered?

I'm not being funny or anything. But the meaning of ***** was;
6. Vulgar Slang A penis.
7. Vulgar Slang A person regarded as highly unpleasant, especially a male.
So, surely if ***** should be filtered if 'Dick' is? Because they basically mean the same thing?
What do you think?

I don't think ***** should be filtered, I see it more along the lines of **** should be unfiltered.
it can also mean if you ***** your finger etc
its another use of the word debate
like, there's you're a ***** which is obviously vulgar, but then there's i *****ed my finger
i'd say keep it unfiltered as it has more than one meaning, not all of which rude.

Well, that leads to a whole different question.
Should dick be unfiltered - Because like Rhiz has stated words have more than one meaning/context? - You a stupid **** (offensive) or I have a **** (not offensive).
Honestly its not hurting, and it did die down till this thread.
Yes but surely if one word is unfiltered and the other isn't which both have the same meaning they either be both filtered or unfiltered.

****, willy and ***** all have the same meaning (pretty much) - so if two of them are unfiltered why is one still filtered?
It goes with a lot of other things, Habbox need to decide - one or the other, not half way in between.

Yeh but either way with that, it's still not exactly polite. penis, is politer and it's obvious that d*** is actually just a rude word in general even though it may be used in different contexts.

Exactly. That is why I have bought it up.
Habbox can't have one and not the other - They are basically contradicting themselfs.

I dont like whats happened to the filter so either remove it all and let the mods do the job or make it quite strict. I agree if ***** is allowed the D.ick should be. Undertakers V sign from gordon brown is far less offensive than piss or ***** but hxf think different :s they have got to go one way or the other and not make a total mess of it by not being able to decide either way. Who says what word or image is more offensive than another? it depends on your area alot of the time so a poll that all forum members can vote on wou.ld give a better indication to what we find offensive and not what we are told is offensive by a few people and some who dont even live in the UK.

I totally agree but we all know Habbox Management don't like to be told, don't we. and if it come down to voting most words would be unfiltered.

I very much agree with the ending of your post, the forum is based around a UK site, with the majority of members from the UK; therefore it should be someone from the UK who decides whether things are offensive or not, because there is much variation all over the world - and it's only fair that it is based on the UK.

I made a post in the council forum asking if you thought piss was swearing and it got a very mixed response. I think it depends where in the UK you are from as well as what country. They seem to be stuck in the middle with a select few telling us whats swearing and whats not and some things I find less offensive to what has been unfiltered. :eusa_wall

I don't think ***** should be unfiltered because yes it's not explicit as some swear words but 9 out of 10 times it is used to insult someone rather than 'I *****ed my finger with a pin' or whatever. However, it doesn't really bother me either way just if it was my decision it would be filtered.
Callum.

I'd much rather have to put a letter in italics when I say ***** than to have it said everywhere. Where can you actually say it out of a cus, "I *****ed my finger" Yeah, that happens everyday.

So do I. And surely if we are going with Habbo here as a Habbo Fansite surely the filter rules should be the same as in game? Even though, Habbo's filter can be turned off but your still not allowed to use swearing offensively.

Well I can say *** which means exactly the same thing, and I doubt anyone cares... Well, they haven't in the past but I bet they will now I've pointed it out. I don't think it should be unfiltered, since it's offensive to users. Words like **** shouldnt be unfiltered imo either. There's some words which would be alright to unfilter but it's the fact that some people are immature in using these words, which puts the whole filtering issue into something of a doubt. I'd much rather prefer it if you could turn off the filter...
That's going Habbo'ish lol, but I'm sure you could find a hack/script in VBulletin Forums.

I believe the filter should be there for all words or not there at all.
If bitches or bitch is filtered than ***** should be too.
*REMOVED* should be unfiltered. One reason being my dog is one and when people call you a *REMOVED* they don't mean it seriously, because lets face it, when *REMOVED* is used, it's not offensive as it's just not an offensive word.
The word '*****' should stay unfiltered you may have *****ed your finger on a thorn.

well if you're getting picky then we may aswell bring the issue of Piss back up.. which would,
(a) mean another pointless debate
(b) you possibly losing your forum name
you know aswell as i do that ***** & piss are hardly offensive. in my opinion, there are a few more words that should be unfiltered but we'll have to wait and see. :)

If you read the thread Piss actually says he chose the name because he could but believes it should be filtered also they are changing their forum name.
How is this pointless? people are offended now by a picture of 2 fingers being stuck up and thats less offensive than ***** or piss. They have to remove all words from the filter and let mods do the job or they need to be stricter. Having a few people decide what THEY think is offensive and not offensive is silly as we all see things differently.
There needs to be a filter on or off for each user and then the filter as strict as poss. I would of course have the filter off out of choice but its not nice to see swearing all over and should folloew the habbo filter as it used to until people thought it a good idea to change that.
Ever thought not using the filter quite strictly is just another reason for habbo to ignore HX as official?

Not officailly but maybe there is a hack? if not is there a place to request a hack? I would not think its that difficult to do.
If people did not swear all over the filter would never be needed but when you can avoid it easily by inserting a . etc is there really any need for it on at all?
Some of us think certain words should be filtered and others dont want them filtered which causes alot of issues like these. The rules need altering to stop having these grey areas. It seems people ask for the place to be more easy going but they alter the wrong things and ignore alot of the other issues brought up.

Unless I specifically looked up the word '*****' then I would never think it means what was stated in the first post. To me (in North America) generally it just means someone who is being a pain or a 'd*ck' (in the sense that they are being mean, rude, annoying, or just plain stupid). To me it doesn't seem hurtful enough to need to have it filtered...

Maybe we should ask why they were unfiltered in the first place. Either unfilter everything or be stict on everything :s you cant tell us whats more or less offensive than other words as there are some far less offensive words in my opinion that are still filtered :s
The filter here was set up to be as identical to the habbo filter as possible so I think that should still be the case and then when VB has a hack or makes it optional to turn the filter on and off for each member like habbo.
If you do manage to get the chance to become official I am pretty sure habbo would ask for the filter to be greatly improved. The bit what makes me angry about this is the filter was fine and somebody decided to remove things for no apparent reason :s I think they were trying to make HxF less strict but the way to do that was sort the mod guide instead of remove a few vulgar words.

Surely using that criteria ANY negative or slightly rude word is offensive and therefore ANY negativity or slight rudeness is against the rules? So words like idiot, dumb, stupid, bad, crap, annoying, twit, penis etc would all warrant a ban on someone. Piss isn't a vulgar swear word and as far as I've known the novelty of saying piss and ***** died down, why did you dig it back up... again?
Copying the Habbo filter isn't a necessity, especially when the majority of Habbox Forum users are over the age of 13-15 and the majority of the forum are aware of the words and aren't as offended as they would be if, for example, the F wordwas thrown about. Besides, the Bobba Filter is fartoo strict for its own good.
As stated, the words aren't offensive and aren't vulgar. They're listed as a minor vulgarity or 'minor swears' and are used in day to day life, although I have to admit, ***** wasn't a word I wanted unfiltered. The two I questioned were dick and piss because there is no way you can be vulgar and still hold some dignity or not look like a complete idiot. The way to make a forum less strict includes all of the forum. The moderating system is a big part of it, but you must go through all the details as to not make confusion on the moderators side and the members side.

Somebody else mentioned Piss should be filtered somewhere in the thread so I never dug it back up. I think as a habbo fansite who wants to become official should have their filter as close to the habbo filter as possible.
I am not against swearing at all and sometimes use very bad language but theres a time and a place for it and I dont think that place is HxF.
I am all for a hack to turn off the filter individually and then this argument about what should and shouldnt be filtered would be gone for good.
I do however find piss and ***** more offensive than the V sign on undertakers sig that he was forced to remove.

There are many many other words that are more deserving to be unfiltered than ***** is. The basis on which it can be used in a non-offensive way is very small as it is, if ***** isn't filtered then there's a whole lot more that needn't be either.

I think someone suggested the filter be removed further up and let mods do the work, I think that's a good idea imo. Keep the really bad ones/racist ones filtered (the c word and the dreaded "n" word spring to mind) and let the rest be used freely with anyone who directs them towards other people being infracted under the insults rule. It'd make for a more pleasant and immature forum (swearing isn't big or clever) but it'd avoid the double standard of leaving piss, shiz and other such words unfiltered.

I acutally agree with this point - Remove the filter completely, if the user decides to use the word in an inappropriate way - They should suffer the consequences.
Doesn't ***** mean like a erected penis?
And it's not even filtered.

Supposedly, where I come from anyway - Thats why I bought it up.
And Jhr has explained it depends from where you come from but overall it is classed as that, yes.
I think the forum should be like 'school rules' to put it bluntley - You wouldn't be able to say Piss or ***** at school, whatever year you are in, so?
I know the forum has over 16s on it, but the majority are 13-16 right?
