View Full Version : Feedback about the debate forum and what is needed

My feedback on the debating forum (again)
I think the official debates is quite good and well run but we are lacking a place to debate non official debates in that forum.
Would it be possible to have a public debate forum as a subforum next to the finished debates? this way you can move any really good debates to the official Hx debates area for us to discuss. At the minute its turning into a debate in the suggest a debate thread. I think something is needed and this would stop people ruining that thread and even though I know i should not be debating there I cant help posting because we have no place for public debates unless the management say we can and start a debate. We could post it in discuss anything or spam but most the threads in those forums go off topic pretty quickly but not in the debates forum. This would be a simple fix that has been asked for over and over and for some reason still gets ignored. I am not saying you have to choose a debate from the public sub-forum and i know some fools would add pathetic things to debate but they would soon die out and the good strong debates continue. Would their be any harm in a sub forum next to the closed debates? give it a weeks trial? if you won't would it be possible for somebody to explain why not? we had 3 club tropica forums (not sub forums) that were not wanted by most and not needed but still forced upon us so why not this after it being suggested many times over the last couple of years.
We currently have a princess diana debate which is a great topic but i think exhausted over the years and i cant even be bothere to give my views on it for the 12th time but a public debate forum would give you much more of an idea what we want to discuss and you would not have to move the public debate you could always re write it and then start it again in the official debates.
Give it a chance and I am sure you wont regret it :)

We've tried to tell this to senior management before but they were totally against it for some reason even though 99.9% of the members wanted it.

I know :( well remember we have a new forum manager who seems to be getting along pretty well so if he also agrees he could put our point over :) a sub forum next to the finished debates is well out the way and not going to cause any problems at all. If they are worried about a mod for it i am sure there would be a number of people who would offer their services who are well respected and trusted members of the forums.
They cant keep ignoring an issue that would improve the forums.
If they reply theres discuss anything to use I suggest we wipe out every forum and discuss everything in the discuss anything and yes that is sarcastic.

You have no idea how many threads along these lines i myself have posted, never loan the ones by many other users who feel the same. For some inexplicable reason the incredibly obvious benifits and lack of any real downside dont appear to be taken in to concideration on this issue.
Habbox even used to have this... it worked well until it was removed, with the current system in replacament.

I have seen loads of threads but admit i did have a bit of time away so missed many more. Surely its worth a trial at least just to see how well it works? if its a total failure then dump anything from the sub forum into the spam and thats the end of it.

Definitely, im all for it. Im just disheartened by the absurd dismissal this issue has repeatedly received. A proper "open" debates forum would be a massive improvement to the forum. Id likely start using this one more frequently again rather than venturing to places like wis.dm to actually get some proper debating done.

In the World News forum debates have started and then been closed. Infact just like debates are closed in this forum and all forums. Can I ask Management; WHY CAN WE NOT DEBATE?

Yeah, I think this work well as long as people didn't get too heated with their debating. With close moderation this would run smoothly. What are their reasons for not allowing this?

what's wrong with heated debating, if you want to debate be prepared to debate, if you wana go suck your thumb in the corner and cry every time someone disagrees with you, go do that and dont look at the forum. It needs no more moderation than any other part of the forum.
Its simple enough.

Maybe it doesn't concern you directly but if you had looked around the forums you would see people go over the top with swearing. When I said heated debating I meant more people struggling to get their point across and reverting to abuse of the people against them. I think we both know this would happen. Therefore IN MY OPINION it would need closer moderation

To be honest... The moderation team will remove/close a thread immediately when a lil' bit of short term or meaningless bickering happens, people moan about it all the time! If the forum had to be moderated, the moderator MUST:
Put a written warning in the post that is causing concern.
OR
Make a reply in the thread that states that members need to calm down a little.
But that depends on what's happening.

Because some people all over the forum go over the top swearing, that mean this one specific place needs more modding than the rest of them?... What?
Some people fail to put there points across and resort to aAd hominem attacks, its true. Thats still part of a debate and id rather a good discussion didnt need to be closed because of one idiot. Ive got no problem with a little banter taking place in a debate, its part of the fun of it. If your to immature to debate without getting in a hissy fit, just stay out the forum... Thats my Opinion. The same moderation as everywhere else would be fine.

I dont see a problem with heated debating as long as it doesnt turn into a childish slanging match and if it did the people involved should be dealt with as normal. I do agree that it would be wrong for a mod to close a thread because of a few idiots and should deal with them and their posts and not ruin it for others. I do admit if somebody insults me i can stoop to their level which isnt great but if a mod deals with it quickly when i complain i would have no need to.

Surely you're capable enough to realise that immature children will swear more in this forum than others. Debating involves putting your point across and some people aren't immature enough to debate which i've already stated if you'd been reading my posts. Before, I go off-topic even more i'll revert back to the original topic ;). I do think this is a good idea and could run smoothly depending on whether some immature members ruined them will constant bickering and arguing.

Isn't the uk a democracy? Why do habbox keep doing things that people don't like and they don't listen to the community. People are starting to leave because of the dictatorship here. I mean it's like signing up to a school isn't it? The rules are so strict. I get infractions for the smallest things like double posting and they last for up to 5 months. Also why should you not be able to post even light swear words? I mean there are no 11 year olds on here that would go to their parents and say mama there's the word bum on the forum! Or what W...T...F means. They should listen to us.
I'm probably gonna get an infraction for posting this but that'l just prove my point.

I think that quite a few members will have a quick look and run for the hills when they see issues being discussed properly and in detail. I do however think there are always some people who try to ruin threads because mods just lock them instead of deal with the few trouble makers. I don't think it should be modded differently to how the rest of the forums are supposed to be modded but it does take time to get new mods especially ones who last :P

It would need a couple of users who love debating to mod it to make it work the best because if it was a normal mod who was not really interested would mean they dont put as much effort into keeping the debates going.
I hope we get some senior figures come out of the shadows and show us some support here on this issue or at least give us a good reason why its not allowed and always gets ignored.

I just meant a general mod ;) I have a couple of interesting debates but a lot of them people don't find interesting. A mod for this forum wouldn't work out really well because they would have to be someone who likes debating about everything and it wouldn't be good if they were debating and somebody else swore (etc) as they would be blamed for editing the post because of the mods opinion. Super mods alone would be better for this forum.

i agree, a lot of the 'official' debate topics are stupid, and dont interest me. i like debating when im in the mood, but id obviously prefer to debate about a subject that i feel strongly about.

I'm sure there are lots of mods like that, I know I love a good structured argument and jesus always seems to be up for a fight :P
Why are there never any official replies to threads about the debates section? I don't understand why it seems to be a no-go area :S

I agree that there seems to be no reason why there shouldn't be a forum like this. Perhaps a request for a poll to be added. It could be done as a trial for a couple of weeks, initially to see how popular it was. I really agree that it would need specialist mods such as Mentor, FlyingJesus or Gomme.

I never added a poll because I knew the results would be high and did not want to look like i was trying to force the issue.
I agree itts bad that higher management keep quiet on this issue :s its not like we are asking for anything controversial or offensive :S

I always think polls work much better when added by staff so it looks like we are not trying to force change.

This is a request for a WHO CARES to be added to the debate because it seems a higher of member of management does not care either way on this issue and many more.

Its said you only choose great debates to be discussed in your official thread :o can i ask where the 2 day old debate on princess dianna has gone? its just vanished into thin air :s any reasons why its been hidden?
If it was decided it was a poor debate maybe if we had a public debate forum you could have chose one of the ones that get the members interested?

You have the right to add a poll - it's freedom of expression and it's so much easier for the Forum Management to guage opinion I believe. Nobody feels that you are trying to force change - you have a right to your opinion. Whether people agree with you is up to them :) Anyway Elkaa has kindly added a poll which looks quite positive:D

Yes he has and will look so stupid for adding it as in my thread about feedback in the feedback thread it has already been denied even with such a good response for it in this poll.

If the community want it then surely its a great reason to have it? its not a massive change and interests me much more than 3 club tropica forums.
I really can't see the big deal in refusing it and it really annoys me that something we all think would be a good addition to HxF is denied.

In regards to a public debate forum, that won't happen.
TY for your input it is very much appreciated and I am very impressed with how you are so in touch with the community that makes Habbox so good. :eusa_clap

I like the idea of having an open debates sub forum with picked debates being in the parent forum. We could trial run this and see how it goes. I'll talk to sierk about it :).
Edit: @Jrh, that was in regards making the debates forum itself an open debate forum which people requested a while ago.
I think it's a good idea.
The debated should be approved by management though.

I suggested a Public debates sub-forum from the very start :) next to finished debates is what i thought. Its never a great idea to rush in with a full forum on something and always give it a trial run as a sub-forum whatever it is.
just to clear things up here is what i asked in my post earlier

While you are here will you allow a public debate sub-forum? if the poll wins? does sierk have to agree?

Heres what I said there:
In regards to a public debate forum, that won't happen. We have said that many times now. The main reason for this is we want to only have a few debates running at once to increase the quality of the debates. People can suggest debates in the sticky and we will make that debate when theres a chance. If it was an open debate forum, there would be loads and loads of debates in there with 2 or 3 posts in each.
In regards to having it as a sub forum, there are some things to think about such as what if a debate made in the parent forum is already in the sub forum?
People can easily have debates about a topic in the appropriate forum (ie xbox vs ps3 debate in the console forum) or FF vs IE debate in the tech forum). We don't mind that.
