You should go for it, but as someone else said try and get your mate to help out a bit. I wouldn't go straight up to him and ask him, he could get really freaked out if he is straight :P. But like get a mate to try spark conversation with him, mention you and stuff, then that you're gay and see where it goes?

Best thing to do is talk to the guy.. and just subtly (or directly) ask him bout it...
You said hes camp.. so its not like he would TOTALLY avoid the question.
