View Full Version : Forum filter

It's being really strange recently. On a few occasions over the past few days I've found that it didn't filter really common swear words but then I would use the same word in another post and it would filter them correctly. I don't mean it's because it had a full stop/question mark etc, after it, it just happens randomly. I'll post, for the sake someone investigating, the words that I have (and have seen other people) having trouble with.
Edited by opensourcehost (Forum Administrator): Thread closed as the issue is now sorted and to prevent further avoidance of the filter in this thread.

well that's what it did. i typed earlier on and it didn't filter for some reason. Chris was infracted for typing although I tried it myself in a PM and it did filter.

It like, unfilters some in the context they're used. Like if you say the s word as a question and add a question mark to the end of it, it won't be filtered.

Oh yeah! That needs fixing. Somewhere down the line they've set it so only the word is filtered, not anything around it.

Not necessarily. After I saw you get infracted for typing it earlier I tried it in a PM to myself and it came up as "****?". It's dead weird.

But it isn't your fault. The system is there to block words, it won't necessarily prevent you from using them. The word filter is used during the post process, everything you post goes through it so blaming you is avoiding taking the blame on themselves/filter.

Thats what I tried telling them. I expected the forum the filter the word, when it should have, but it didn't. Oh it's now my fault for posting inappropriate language when the forum should have filtered it? :S It's not only the filter that needs revising...

I agree; what's the point of having a filter if, when it fails to filter common swear words, you get in trouble/have to take the blame for it?

No, sorry Jamie & Jamesy.
1) It is allowed to swear when the swearing is filtered.
Example: I was late for work / For **** sake I would like it if in the first example not just the **** part but the complete 7 letter word was filtered by our word censor, but unfortunately it doesn't work like that. These posts should not be edited. And with being one of the most common swear words, I would say that rule applies there. It wasn't Chris's fault; he was infracted within three minutes which was unfair since he didn't get a chance to edit it out. It was an obvious mistake.

Fine, I'll repeat myself. With the S word being one of the most common swear words it should already be filtered. And the rule I quoted above means he can post that word freely (aslong as he's not trying to insult someone) because it should filter itself.
Fair enough, the filter didn't work. But the moderator in question should've given fifteen minutes (the post editing time) for Chris to realise this and edit it out himself. Instead, he infracted him straight away.

As far as I am concerned type some swearing and either
A) It will get filtered
B) its no longer in the filter so we are allowed to use that word as long as its not directed at anybody.
We currently have a number of words removed rightly or wrongly from the filter so how the hell do we know it should or should not be filtered? if the word shows without using strange symbols then its the fault of VB and whoever maintains HxF.
I also dont like how you just need to put a question mark or full stop on the end of a swearword and it shows :s the filter used to stop that how it was set up so somebody yet again has altered something for no reason for the worst. I would say 2 steps forward and 1 step back but in all honesty its 1 step forward and 3 steps back.

Very true but when they decided to unfilter some words and not others how does he know which? Can the filter be published on a page somewhere so we can see whats allowed and not allowed? would it be kept updated? Some swearing is now allowed so surely we type it and the filter does its job if banned or lets it be seen if not?
There is such a grey area of whats added and not added to the filter and whats offensive to some and not to offensive to others.
LOL edited a little ;)
It's because you're putting (with []'s though) codes which separates the letters and shows the swear word.

Jamie, seriously have you thought about what you are saying here. The filter is for people not having to worry about that sort of thing. Why have it then?
We could all go around typing stars. :S Do you think Chris would intentionally
do this - I don't? I have just tested the filter with 2 swear words on my own forum and even if you put a question mark and fullstop after it it is still filtered and comes up as ****? or ****. There could be something something wrong with the Habbox filter set up and the infraction seems way unfair to me if that is the case. I just tested it in a pm to myself and it comes up infiltered. I can forward it if someone wants?

Hey, what you say is extremely unreasonable. If the forum filter has failed it has failed and I have proved it has failed - I will forward pm if you want me too.
People are allowed to type in words that are filtered - they have been since day 1 of the forum. In fact you used to do it all the time! Chris has been penalised for something that is the fault of a glitch in the VB Bulletin. Check the word out for yourself. Apart from that , Jamie I do not think it is up to you to re-write the forum rules. That's up to Elkaa, ---Mad--- and Sierk, surely? He did not intentionally avoid the filter and therefore it cannot be considered inappropriate either so he should most definitely if there is any fairness on the forum not have an infraction. Don't you realise that?

That's really stupid.
It's like you go through a traffic light - it's on green even though you know it should be on red...
You go through, get your car smashed up and get told:
"Even though it shouldn't have been on green - you still went through. Your fault."
The infraction should be reversed, why should we be punished when something of yours breaks?

Swearing is disallowed on the forum anyway, so the word shouldn't have been typed in the first place regardless of whether the user thought it would be filtered or not.
If you still don't understand what I'm saying after this post then I'm not continuing to attempt to argue my point as you all seem to be ignoring it.

Jamie, you are completely wrong about this - where is the common sense applied here? The filter is not working on this word when there is a ? it is when there is a . It was filtered until recently but there appears to be a glitch. I have reported it in the technical section. You could at least refer it to Elkaa or ---MAD--- to look at which would be the fair way. It's not that we are ignoring it it's that you don't seem to grasp what we are saying. Thanks :)

Has NeverSoft's infraction been removed? If people were meant to type alternative words like crap, then there would be no point in a filter. A simple PM or edit would do. If he put size=2 in areas, then infract him for purposely avoiding the filter. But if it was genuinely typed out, it isn't necessarily his fault because the filter is meant to take control and remove it.

i don't think people should be infracted if the server hasn't filtered it
Unless they obviously mean to avoid the filter like posting a character from character map instead of a vowel

I really can't see why the discussion went in this direction. The point being raised was that there was a fault in the forum filter, causing an infraction for avoiding the filter (which it isnt because he didn't do anything to avoid it). Surely the response should be "Ok, I'll look into the bug, infraction reversed, corry for the inconvenience", I don't quite understand where the discussion came from.
Anyway, glad its being sorted :)

I think I have sorted it now. Let me know if there are any other problems :). Using formatting to avoid the filter is an infractionable offense.
