Scam- Anyone know how they did this?

I quit around 18 months ago.. because I was scammed and lost a fair bit of my furni. It was a typical greed scam, but I still wonder how it was done.
Here's what happened:

Someone on my friends list messaged me asking if I wanted a free HC account. I said yes, and to my surprise he didn't reply with some scam site.. he actually gave me the password, DOB and email address. I logged off my account, logged onto this one and changed the password and email adress.
Then, while on this account I was sent a friend request by someone with a very similar name to the Habbo which I had been given. I accepted, and it was the guy who had given me the account.
He said a the people on the friends list of the account didn't know he had given it to me. Apparently they would be happy to buy rares for higher than usual prices because they considered him to be a friend.
So I moved some rares from my normal account to the new one and placed them in a room to make a rare shop.
He then messaged me on the new account saying 'Have you moved them all across?'
I replied and he told me to message people on the friends list saying I needed to trade some rares.

Then I was disconnected from the hotel. I couldn't log back into the account which I had been given, the one with the rares on.
I went to the room where I had placed the rares on my normal Habbo, and saw this HC Habbo and the account which had f/r me in the room, picking up the items.

How could this have happened? Considering that I changed all the login information.

When you change the email account of an account an email is sent to the original account so they can revert/cancel it if wasn't them who changed it. My guess is they used the link and well changed back the pass, Unlucky :(.

Wow when i started scamming was just things like, give an hc and i'll drop loads of furni in ur room.

Ppl back then fell for it lol.

What happens is when you change your email the original email address gets a email saying do you want to change your email. The scammer clicks no. So the account is still registered with his email address. The once your furni is on the they click forgot password. Then habbo will send the password to that email. Then they have your pw and furni. I hope you didn't make it the password to your propper account. If you did, change it.

And you sure of asked him why do you need to know if I've traded the rares.

You don't need to verify an email for that.

by doing the 'forgotten password' thing and then changing it to something else, since they still knew the DOB, which you can't change.

They changed the password by getting the one you changed sent to them? They then changed the password to their liking as they had the D.O.B, email and such.

It's not clever at all they can get it back if they know the DOB.

That's exactly how it's done, and that's why it's just one reason why it's against the Habbo Way to trade or even give away accounts. The other important factor to remember here, is that the Habbo first offering their account for trade or giveaway could at anytime use the HHT and claim their Habbo account has been stolen, and the person accepting the account for trade would then be accused of stealing (perm ban). It's one of the worst tricks going.

Im guessing they contact Habbo or something saying they made the Account and they can check the IP etc. Then they changed the password etc.

It is actually quite interesting, people that say they are stupid are usually the ones that get scammed.

If it ever happens to anyone, don't bother changing the e-mail address. If you just change the password then an e-mail won't be sent to them asking to confirm the change of e-mail. ;)

As I said, this happened ages ago when I was a bit naiive and desperate to increase my wealth. Typical greed scam but meh.. I recovered.
