View Full Version : Mac OS - The easiest to hack?
---MAD---

The winner of a competition "PWN TO OWN" says the Mac is the easiest OS to hack into out of the 3 most known (linux, Mac, Windows). The winner walked home with $10,000 and the Mac book air which he hacked into within 2 minutes!
Seems pretty interesting but I am sure it will be patched up soon :).

It was patched 20 minutes after and also it wasn't OSX that was the exploit it was Crossover that was the exploit door.

That is pretty impressive. I have heard MAC is very hard to hack into, I guess they were proven wrong.

I based my opinion on the article that was posted. I must have misread something, anyhow. I see now that it was not the actual MAC, rather it was a "crossover" as you stated meaning it was from one computer to another.

Nothing is unhackable if you know what you are doing.

Hacking isn't hard, the theory behind it is.

When it wasn't actually os x? It was just done by a crossover. Don't you lot listen to Dave? And it was patched after 20 mins. So its still safe LOL.

So is Windows, lets have different feelings about that! If you read the other thread, Dave or someone did say everything is hackable in a way. <_<

I know anything is hackable. They make this sound like a piece of cake.

Well, they didn't trot in off the street unprepared.
It was only a piece of cake because they had rehearsed it so many times.

Anything complex is hackable some way or another. You just need people with motivation to do it. Many people would rather hack Windows than Macs because there are more Windows users. Many Mac users run without antiviruses etc.

Ok, time to take an interest in what dave is saying!
What's a crossover?

Does it really matter if it was Safari? Safari gets shipped with every copy of OSX and if they found an exploit in safari then really they could get access to alot of machines if it wasn't patched (thank god it was patched quickly).

Obviously there is more Windows user. But the hacker must be really bored.

Yeah and I'm one of them. Yeah I'm glad it was patched quickly as it was :)

I am now a Windows Vista :D
Crossover is just a way of directly connecting two computers together using a crossover cable from one ethernet port to the other.
That is pretty impressive. I have heard MAC is very hard to hack into, I guess they were proven wrong.
You've probably heard that its very hard to pick up viruses on a Mac.. and that's true.
Anyone can hack into any operating system if they know what they're doing.

Is this the same competition where Linux and Vista haven't been hacked into yet in the same way as the Mac, or did I mis-read the other thread?

It was simply an exploit in Webkit. Which was patched ages ago but not updated by apple. This just comes down to not keeping software up to date.
