View Full Version : (Nearly) All coins changing the 'tails' design

Mr.Sam

I don't have a source to link to, however on 'The One Show' they were talking about all of the coins (except the £2 one) will be changing their designs on wednesday - the designs are being kept secret until they are released on wednesday.

Apparently there was a competition to design the 50p tails side.

if anyone has info on this please post :P

Why can't we just change the currency instead of the designs. I want the euro. :(

Mr.Sam

Thats not it, only a few people know what it will be - including the queen and PM.
there was a comp to design it - that might just be someones entry.

Does tails change all the time anyways?

Also, asif they tell people all the details of the coins, such as width, thickness, material, weight.

I wonder if this is true or something, be nice to see the new designs, Im sure BBC will report it sooner or later.

Edit: Why not? You hardly get people copying their be a secret in doing the coins anyway somehow?

Why anyone would do that to a range rover is beyond me! BACK ON TOPIC, I think the new coins look nice, and they can't switch the pound to euro because it will mess up your economy. why fix something that isn't broken?

why fix the back of a coin when it isn't broken.

It aint' too hard to make moneys, if you're only going to put them in a vending machine. I made one in school ages ago when we were doin some metal work thingy and it worked in the machine :)

Then we are tied down to the EU and our currency will be affected by all of the EU. We want to be getting futher out of Europe, not more into it. Oh and all of the EU have the Euro because they are all pro-EU and don't mind having other people controlling them.

£1,000,000 notes do exist, but they're very plain - more like IOUs really.

So they're just on about changing the picture on the back?

That would take so much more time, effort, money.

Also the pound - euro conversion rates are supposed to be tricky to do. Unlike a few other countries in the EU e.g Germany. Who's money converts very simply.

Also pounds are great because you get the word fifty written all over the 50p :)

Yeah and me, I still don't know why we haven't joined yet. Ireland uses the Euro, don't they?

DM 1.95583 to a Euro was what they exchanged them at. Very simple indeedy. :S

They do.

I don't see why not, myself, but then there's all sorts of arguments, and some of them are like "Oh yeah!" but the pound is something very British, and really one of the few things that are these days.

The Royal Mint has unveiled the first new designs for Britain's coins since decimalisation nearly 40 years ago. The Mint commissioned new "reverse" designs for the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins that feature the shield of the royal arms to partner the Queen's head on the flip side. Here's a first look at the changes to your change.

http://uploadpicz.com/mynameisjake/33QRKMR.jpg
The Royal Arms are a symbol of the reigning monarch. A Shield of Arms was first used on English coinage in the mid-14th century, while the Royal Arms in its current form was introduced during the reign of Queen Victoria. Designer Mathew Dent tested his design idea by printing out an image of the Royal Arms and arranging the coins over the top before outlining the coins and trimming.

http://uploadpicz.com/mynameisjake/D8KKKAZ.jpg
Since the time of Charles II, successive monarchs have been depicted on coins facing in the opposite direction to their immediate predecessor. There have been four standard portraits of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II on our coins, all facing to the right.

http://uploadpicz.com/mynameisjake/78UZJ6V.jpg
Winner of the design competition, Matthew Dent, was in primary school when the current 5p coin was released in 1990. Coin designs are usually found through competitions, although they’re often restricted to freelance artists and Royal Mint engravers. The last public competition was in 1996 to obtain a design for the new £2 coin.

http://uploadpicz.com/mynameisjake/773VLFG.jpg
This is the first new design to feature on many coins in more than forty years, and the first time a single design has been used across a range of coins in this way. Coins aren’t just used for spending and saving – they’ve often been used as weights and are stacked in the huge pendulum of Big Ben to regulate the clock.

http://uploadpicz.com/mynameisjake/468KNMB.jpg
The 20p coin is the same shape as the 50p coin, but smaller. The new coins will enter circulation gradually this year. There are more than 800 million coins in circulation and coins with the current designs will remain legal tender.

http://uploadpicz.com/mynameisjake/YVLXIJM.jpg
The 50p coin issued in 1969 was the first coin in the world to be struck in the shape of an equilateral curve heptagon. The front of all coins will continue to bear the existing portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, approved for use on United Kingdom coins from January 1 1998.

http://uploadpicz.com/mynameisjake/DCZRK23.jpg
The £1 coin unites the set of coins with its depiction of the complete Shield of the Royal Arms. The reverse of the £1 coin wasn’t included in the Royal Mint’s original plan, but came about after an ‘inspired’ meeting of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee, said designer Matthew dent. The £1 coin reverse helped depict, define and support the entire design theme, the Royal Mint said.

i'm guessing it'l be when the 2009 coins come out. Not much point changing the 2008 ones since they'll have to make 'em all first.

The £2 coin was introduced in 1997. Because it’s so new, the Royal Mint felt it was too soon to redesign its reverse side.

We haven't joined because of our pound being such a strong currency against the Euro. If we did join the Euro every other EU countries' economic problems with the currency would effect us. Why join something where you put yourself at economic risk & why destroy more of our countrys identity?

I think they're ok, much more modern and look much better than Euros, so yeah and I like the idea of having Churchill etc on the coins.

Are they? A 2007 Series E £20 note is still worth £20... The old ones are still legal tender, and always will be, until they finally die out in about 30 years time. Well even then, they'll still be legal...
