View Full Version : Habbos.net - Phew!

I was looking at the official fansite list yesterday and I saw a fansite called habbos.net which I registered on ages ago and simply forgotten about.

To my surprise, when going on it I saw it had more users than Habbox forum!!

I was going crazy thinking how is this possible and how we never knew about this and never heard about the fansite for so long!

It turns out this is because their online sessions expire after at least 1 hour! Therefore a user logged on 1 hour ago and a user browsing right now would be displayed as online on their list which explains the huge number of guests and also the large amount of users online throughout the day (they had 72, we had 67 when writing this up).

Habbox Forum has a 15 minute session expiration! Therefore we had 67 users in 15 minutes. They had 72 in the whole hour.

Now I don't feel as stupid or blind :D!

This is in no way bashing their forum or anything - I think it's a great community they have going and wish them nothing but the best of luck! I only wish vBulletin forced all forums to use the same inactive session expiration limit (or at least a way to find out how many users are on in the last say.. 5 minutes to really tell how active a forum is) as for the average user, they probably don't even know about session expiring times etc and just think "Oh hey this forum seems more popular, I am going to join!".

Did you know about session expiration limit option in vBulletin before reading this thread?

lol get your claws out mad...

Why don't we up our time out?

I don't really know how to say it without offending other forums out there but the simple fact is, we want the list updated to give true readings on the forums activity.

Although vbulletin.com itself uses a 30 minute session expiration limit, we could consider upping to that but I don't see any benefits from doing so to be honest. At least on our list if it says "Online" theres a bigger chance the user is still actually online.

Come to think of it..one benefit would be that users who don't know about the time limit would know which forum is really more popular out of the all other popular Habbo forums.

Again I want to stress I am not bashing any other Habbo fansite here only stating a few facts in regards to the online list on most forum software.

I know your joking but I would never want to start a "fansite war" or anything like that with another fansite. Not really appropriate and doesn't solve anything. I much rather be friends with the owners/management and share advice :).

Yeah happened to a forum I ran before, and wondered why it was happening until someone told me about it and to put it lower :P

But habbos is kind of erm "cheating" ;)

HxF and habbos are very different. HxF is strongly a UK only forum however Habbos is internationally popular. It has a great community and always has events running. That's the thing I think HxF could improve on, it's events.

Edit: I don't see how habbos is 'cheating'. As it's internationally popular then users from say AU and SG won't really be on at the same times as the UK users which are currently online.

HxF has international members too though, and with Habbox World closing and the international departments from there coming over here, there'll be more. And HxF doesn't run events 'cos the site does, which Habbos don't have.

Basically the set time until you are removed from the online list after your last action. Ie if you look at this thread and do nothing else after 15 minutes, you will be removed from hxf online list. On say vbulletin.com, you would stay there for another 15 mins.

Yep, the default session is 900 seconds = 15 mins.

Thats not what we are talking about. You seem to be supporting habbos.net when we are not attacking it only discussing session timings. It seems very popular because the users are kept on the online list for 1 hour therefore anyone within that our that visits the forum remains on the list.

In regards to events, our events are advertised on www.habbox.com (http://www.habbox.com) - our parent site. Hxf is a sister site to Habbox.com.

I said how are they cheating then you replied with they are making the number higher.

Not cheating but rather misinforming users that don't know about these things (maybe even Habbo staff who are not vB experts?

Theres no need for you to come and start arguing. We are simply discussing this maturely so please do so yourself.

Whos to say what time is the right time to set it at. Maybe Habbos just wanted to know on an hourly scale as opposed to a fifteen minute one. I don't think users sign up specifically because of how many members are on each forum at a given time as long as their enough for a sense of community. Habbos and Habboxforum have very different purposes in my opinion, i use both for different things.

I wouldn't say we're misinforming anybody. Firstly, staff aren't concerned by numbers and are interested solely in content. There's no value in having 5 million posts if they're all non-constructive, afterall!

Having timeout set to an hour just means that people don't have to log in as often and it makes administration easier too. Much less time spent searching for people in admin cp... yes, I'm that lazy. We'd orginally changed it to see how we compared to another forum and after a positive response from our users, it stayed that way.

Habbos and HxF have very different purposes and audiences but I shalln't go into that, hehe. :D

Thanks for the comments.

@ Mad,

On vbulletin default software installation you mean?

Yeah, all vBulletin forums are set to a cookie session of 900 seconds, unless changed.

@ MhzT,

Having timeout set to an hour just means that people don't have to log in as oftenIt's much easier to tick the "Remember Me"

Yeah one bad advantage is someone messaging them or replying to the owners thread and he ain't even online just the session says he is.

Different audience I agree. Purposes I am not sure. I think both are forums to cover Habbo and other areas that interest Habbo users.

Yes thats true there is no "right" length of time or anything of that sort.

Ah right cool.

And yeah the reason we put it at 15 mins is due to messaging admin/smod/mod thinking hes there then ending up waiting till the next day when you could have pmed another admin/smod/mod that was active.

Our staff team is a little smaller than yours so that's not really a problem. Our users know that the best way to get support is to ask on the boards and that's what they do :).

there is no set rule on what the timer must be and i don't see the point why they need to "INFORM" anyone of anything it's their site they can run it how they please, although i do sense that you feel the need to "expose" habbos.net as you see them as a threat, face it, their forum looks better, has nicer members, and all the staff are on it. oh and let me not forget official on like every hotel 8-)

Habbos.net is no treat they get half the traffic HabboxForum does.

And yes, If HabboxForum sets their cookies to last 3600 seconds (1 hour) it'd be x3/4 the users on Habbos.net

Fact also is HabboxForum.com based on the UK hotel, Habbos.net is globally? and it's barely trafficked.

Like I said, different purposes and audiences. We're just a forum. We opened a forum and it's unlikely that we'll ever be anything more than a forum.

We opened in Dec 05/Jan 06... we're still a baby :D.

Looking at this thread and then one from the websites forum on Habbos, I don't think the differences could be clearer. I've always come to Habbox for gossip... the kind you'd find in a tabloid; whereas I feel Habbos is a bit more intelligent (the discussions... not the users, so don't all jump on me!).

We're happy with our community and so are other people. We don't want anything more!

Why would this type of thread be made if all these arguments/debates were not to be expected?

I think HabboxForum and Habbos are 2 different communities, none of which choose to compete with each other. We all have our different views and our likes with each forum. I like the massive "Habbo UK News & Rumours" forum on Habboxforum and I like the "Habbo UK News & Rumours" on Habbos because both of them have different thoughts and feelings on news (most of Habbos threads are true *cough*). I like Habbox for the fast responses, I hate Habbox for the stupid competition between who posts news first. I like Habbos for their very clever staff who keep the forum clean 24/7 but I do not like the inactivity of the forum.

So, basically this thread was a bad choice to make ---mad---, simply because you thought you were going to get the easy comments such as "LOL" but it turned out you were bashed for making Habbos look bad for pointing out their fault or their lack of popularity.

Miley Cyrus is fit :D

So habbos.net get like fake members or sumt :S I'm confused lol

They do not have any fake members, they just have their time limit on their "who's online" ideal on for more then 15 minutes and that means whoever is inactive and online doesn't disappear from the "who's online" thing until the time is up. Which means it keeps adding up making it seem popular.

@xP

They do.
But not for the UK hotel.

Just because a site is popular doesn't mean they need rare values. ;)
