And the reason he would do it is because his wife couldn't have kids and it was the only option left. Some people are desperate for kids and would do whatever they could in their power to get one.

His wife cant have kids for some fertility reason so i suppose (s)he just put his/her hand up and said "Hey I've got all the bits, I can do it" so he took fertility treatment.

I still call it a female or an 'it' because I dont think theres much very manly about it. It's got some male hormones but thats about it. No male bits or anything.
