I've been having trouble with my network for a while now. I don't use wireless as it's too slow. I've tried all the network setup options to try and network a couple of pc's so I can share files. Neither computer can find the other one. One pc is xp home and the other is vista.

First, wireless for the internet is fine, its slower at transfering files over the network.
You need to make sure they are on the same workgroup.
In Vista: Start > right click Computer > properties > Advanced system settings > computer name > change > make the workgroup called WORKGROUP
In XP: Right click My Computer > Properties > Computer Name > change > make the workgroup called WORKGROUP
Now they *should* be able to see each other, in Vista make sure the network is set to private so it shares files etc...: Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Customize > Private network > Okay > under sharing and discovery turn on and off what you like.

I've already done those things nick. Thanks Tom, now it's showing the other computers and although file sharing and networking is enabled on both computers I can't access the other computer. Says it can't find the network path.
