Makeshift MacBook Router

Yesterday I noticed a guy directly outside my house on his laptop. From what I could see he was using my connection which wasn't protected as my granda who set it up never added it, after me saying countless times to add it. So my uncle went out and told him to move and all he did was turn the car around at the bottom of the street and drove to the top and stopped again. So we spent hours trying to access my granda's Belkin account by to no avail. So we had to unplug it.

After a couple of hours without a connection I decided to try and get a way of getting internet in the mean time. While I wait for my granda to get home from Switzerland. So I've hooked my MacBook up to the wall with the original BT DSL Modem and using it as a secure router as it's been passworded.

I'll try and get pictures of it, the only good digital camera is in Switzerland atm :P

Try this with the belkin

Then simply press login, by default there is no password so if your grandad never bothered with any other security chances are he never changed that either.

Then set up a WEP key as per usual :)

We tried that but once we were in we setup a WEP pass, then the computers wouldn't allow us to input a password for the connection. Just seems we'll have to wait for him to get back, the MacBook is making my connection seem faster anyway :P

Don't use WEP its total crap. Can be cracked in a matter of seconds with a laptop. Use WPA2 to ensure good security. You'll have to get a update for it to work with windows XP not sure about vista.

Our Windows computers are on Media Center and our Macs are on Leopard. My uncle is thinking of simply getting a Netgear router instead of the Belkin one. My mum uses a Netgear router at her house and I love it. Very easy to use.

The macs would be fine for the sort of password he was talking about, i was checking it out in my settings :P

Yep id go for the new router if I was you too. Belkin are useless, mine randomly blocks out the whole network from visiting anything until I turn it off and back on.

I am fairly certain you only need to press the reset button behind the router (with a pin) and it removes everything like passwords, user name and ISP details. But that is of course only a good idea if you have your grandma's details :)

Well the fact was when it was all set up originally I was still in the time where my parents and so on didn't trust me. So everything has been passworded for my own protection when I was younger. So I can't access his account even though I'm the one who has to correct any problems :P

Sucks when that happens doesn't it :P When does she come back and will she know? If all else fails, reset the router (is possible) so it wipes everything and phone the ISP for the details :)

"He" it's my granda not grandma :P He comes back Thursday so it's not too long. I think I'll just leave it so I don't get blamed for anything that goes wrong if you get me. As I even got blamed for his new computer crashing when I was staying with my dad 13 miles away :P

Dont secure it, put a http packet sniffer on it. Then you can cretit card fraud him. :D
