why is this word filtered? It's just a word to describe some types of people.

I wonder why. Do you know how to better describe people like that? Mentally disabled. Case closed.

Hmm, nice but still the word ****** has a slightly different meaning to mentally disabled. Like they act that way but aren't actually disabled.

Idiotic you mean? Well, then you're turning it into an insult aren't you.

otherwise, you could say they were mentally incapable. physically disabled would just be disabled soooo... got a problem?

I'm not questioning the meaning of the word :P Just why it's filtered when it's not a very bad word at all.

I mean... 7 year olds use it and the minimum age for this forum is 11, not 6 like most of the staff behave as it is.

Pyroka

In the eyes of the Moderators, it's considered as an insult and ano many people do call others that for an insult. There's not many mentally disabled people on the forum anyway (that I know of) but I doubt they'd want to admit it either.

Just to add on, do you remember when they unfiltered *****? Everyone used it against eachother but it worn off after a while. I doubt 'mentally disabled' would be as fast as that.

Calling somebody is though don't you think? What nice use of the word could you think of on the forum if it was unfiltered?

I wanted it unfiltered for effect, you could throw the insult of stupid and idiot at someone and they aren't any better than ******.

you may be describing a character in a comodie. "Mr ******" etc... Many uses.

It also just points out how down to earth the rules are, it's getting as bad as my school and I don't get told off for calling someone a ****** there.

You have just basicly said in your post that it is acceptable to call 'types' of people that word, which in my opinion is offensive.

I did too. I personally don't think it should be unfiltered. The arguement that
young people use the word doesn't mean it's right to use it and it is pretty offensive, I agree.

Hmm... I get what you mean, but idiot & moron are taken much more lightly in schools. Barely noticeable actually, but 'mentally disabled' is taken as offensive in some schools. What youre best to do is to just wait, because they might consider unfiltering it but it's really the forum management's decision to.

Don't hold your breath.

The word has been brought up to describe certain types of people and used as an insult. One does not say " ohh ree... " for the sake of it, it's general useage is offensive.

You don't have a pretty valid reason as to why it should be unfiltered, if you want to use an expression use something that is not rude and offensive.

I'd just like you to know I came accross the idea when describing someone who I despise of. (not on this forum)

you do know that ****** isn't just used as an insult, it is actually a type of person.

When you say that you blatently mean it in an offensive way. :P I'd just give up on pushing the issue, it probably won't happen. Especially in the way you've contradicted yourself quite badly... Mmmm, I guess it's the future which will deciiiiiide.

and yes, i do know it's a type of person, whether he/she be disabled or mentally incapable/disabled.

I'm not thinking straight at the moment. Before I go offline i'll post this for you guys to read through which proves my point that it is a type of person http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_******ation

edit: look at the link, it even filters that! (put the word r. e. t .a. r. d where the stars are)

I'll rephrase that: 7 years ago 7 year olds used the word reqularly and don't even get told off by any present adult.

I can see where you are coming from but as far as I know it is not an acceptable word for ESN or mentally disabled in any walk of life It is an offensive word fullstop. This applies to the UK anyway.

Just to hear it directly from one of the horses mouths (never thought I'd end up comparing the Admin/Site Management team to horses :P), Yoshi pretty much summarizes why this word will never be unfiltered.
It's inappropriate, offensive and very rude. There is no possible scenario in which you would need to use that word without there being a more suitable and less vulgar way of expressing it.

All of your arguments so far can be deemed as invalid:
You're suggesting that we allow you to increase the potential for insulting other people because idiot and moron aren't good enough for you? That's essentially the opposite of what we're going for. The last thing we want to do is promote a hostile environment in which words like that can be thrown back and forth freely.
Why would anyone ever call a character in a story in such an inappropriate way? The sole purpose would be to insult or degrade and that's not what anyone wants to see on this forum.
Just because your school allows it, it doesn't mean we have to and quite frankly I'm disappointed that your school allows that sort of insult to be acceptable.

Also, yet again, Catzsy provides a reliable voice of rationality. :)

I think a lot of filtered words can be used well for effect, just the immature members use them for insults.

I'm not talking specifically about my school. I'm talking about every single state school in the country. If it's so degrading then they may aswell filter mentally ill too as I could always use that as an insult. We've already found out that it means exactly the same thing.

offtopic: I find the feedback forum better for debating than the debates forum. All you gotta do is start a topic that everybody thinks that you're wrong and you have a hell of an argumant :D

Because of those slightly untrustworthy and questionable members of the forum, the filter must remain in place for this sort of word for all other users and partially because it just doesn't promote a positive community. I know I wouldn't enjoy this forum half as much as I do if insults were allowed to be freely passed around and handed out or inappropriate/vulgar language was permissable in any post should the poster wish to casually swear or post a bit of inappropriate language.
The word isn't exactly 'commonplace' in my school and is most definitely punishable if said in the wrong company or at the wrong time, not entirely sure what you mean by 'every single state school in the country' because evidently, this isn't the case.

offtopic: Its one heck of a one sided 'argument'

Yeah, I can't really add to what nick said, there really isn't an argument for unfiltering it as any use of the word is incorrect, politically or otherwise, or insulting.

Idiot and stupid are general words to describe someone's behaviour. 'Mentally disabled' means you have a mental or physical problem and is more of an insult than a nice word, I think the point of the word is to offend, because you should never call someone who has mental or physical problems one of them...

I'm still waiting for dick to be unfiltered, because the word isn't offensive in the slightest. Plus, when I put forward that word and piss, it was hoped upon that they both would be unfiltered, not sure where ***** came from :S

I think in instances like that it shouldn't be filtered but generally, it should be.

As been said, there's no positive use for it what so ever.

Calling a mentally disabled person a ****** is, although terminology wise is correct, is not a very nice thing to do. Its the equivalent of calling a quadripalegic a cripple, or an epileptic a ****.

Even though you unfiltered a word which is slightly more offensive than a word that cannot be used offensively without looking like a total prat at the same time? :P The initiative was good, but the other word requested could of been unfiltered too :P

I can't speak on that as I really can't judge the word *****. Its not used in America, the first time I saw it was on here so I can't say I have a very good understanding of its severity, so I can't compare it either :P

The word in the OP can be very offensive actually and so it should be banned, but it also is french for pull back or something because as an Airbus comes in to land it goes:
"50, 40, 30, 20, 10, R*E*T*A*R*D, R*E*T*A*R*D." :)

Its not just french, its actually English. It means to stop or to slow down. It must be the Latin root as it also can mean "slow person" which is closer to the more offensive meaning as well as the technical (but politically incorrect) meaning.

However, the word that rhymes with firetruck also means intercourse, but that doesn't mean we're about to unfilter it because of its alternate meaning :P
