[HELP] Startup [+Rep]

When i start windows on my pc it all loads up when i go to click on my user the desktop background but no icons come up or the menu bar at the bottom the only way i can get it to work is re instsall windows but it does it next time i go to log back on :| i have windows XP

Reboot the whole computer, and you should of have a CD to reinstall and that lot.

When it does it press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to bring up task manager. Go File > New Task (Run) > Type in "explorer.exe" without the quotes and press enter or click ok.

Unfortunately have come accross this before, basicly it sounds like that explorer or a module for explorer is probably cycling your processor at 100% usage.

Have you tried safe mode? - When computer is starting up, just after it shows packard bell logo (when you first turn it on) press the F8 key, and select safe mode.

Post back if the machine shows up explorer etc fine in safe more (or not). If it is doing it in safe mode (not showing anything), you might want to go for the full destructive recovery; If its starting okay in safe mode, whilst logged in, click start->run, then type in "msconfig" (without quotes), and press okay, select the "Selective Startup" option and untick "Load System Services" and "Load Startup Items", and press okay. This basicly disables all the services and startup programs - so if its a crashed program / service it may show signs of aid. You'd then have to run msconfig and slowly re-enable things (if you look in the tabs at the top, it shows "Services" and "Startup"), and then tick the next in the list (not unticking the other options if you've done it more than once). If you tick one and it repeats you've identified which program / service it is, and you can leave all ticked except that one.

Full Destructive Recovery:
If you have recovery disks run them - or for most packard bells its either the F10 or F11 key (when you see packard bell logo, when switching on) that starts the System Recovery. Just to make sure you know if you re-install windows, and select the full destructive recovery all your personal files will be deleted!


Im not sure if that made 100% sense but reply if it didnt, and you want me to explain :).
