Oh dear! Is the hamster quite old? Has he/she been drinking and how active is it on a night, or is the eating just the noticeable abnormality.

Are you giving him packet food from the pet shop that he isn't eating? Try giving him some salad and see if he eats it. If he doesn't eat he may be sick or something. :(

He's about 7 months old, and he's been sort of active in the night, but noy as much as he used to. I just gave him some vegetables, and he's munching on a carrot right now lol, so I don't know if it's just the food he doesn't like..

Is the Hamster drinking water? I think maybe you should take him to a vet unless he is picky with his food. My cat is terribly picky.
Sometimes their teeth grow so long that they have problems.

It could be the food, but if it's the same he's had for a long time then that shouldn't be the problem. But see how he acts and gets on throught the next few days.

The problem with hamsters is that they can become quite is very easily from forgetting to clean the cage one week or something it came into contact with. If any more obvious problems occour you can just take him to the vet :)

If hamsters are like rabbits, then there is a possibility he's gone off the type of food you've given him. Some rabbits (not all) prefer a variety, dry food for a few weeks, then wet food (carrots etc) the next.

If he's eating a carrot, then that's a good sign, at least he's eating!

Have you taken him to the vets??

about a month ago, one of my (many) Russian Dwarf Hamsters stopped eating, i took him to the vets and the reason was his front teeth had grown larger than the average size giving him a what was describred as a heart beat pain.

he had his front two teeth sawed down and is one of the largest of the pack.

Have you moved his cage at all? As my hamster didn't eat much when we moved him down stairs.

Best check his/her teeth, as they could be overgrown or misaligne

He won't eat his hamster food at all, but he will eat fruit and veg. I'll ask my mam if we can take him to the vets :)

What type of hamster food are you giving him? Try a diffrent brand of hamster food. Have a hamster chew stick in the cage too. Give him as much fruit and vegitables as you can also try some fattier foods for your hamster like chocolate once a week just to keep its weight up.

check the mouth to see if there's anything stuck there or if it seems to be cut or anything, this could be the case.

if you're feeding it lots of treats then that can put it off it's food, stop feeding treats temporarily.

if that doesn't work, try a different brand of food.

if all else fails, seek veterinary advice.

When I first got him, I fed him the hamster food from pets at home, and he was eating that perfectly, then all of a sudden he stopped eating it. So we got him some food from the local pet shop up the street, and he wont eat that one either.

Your not a hamster owner are you? Hamsters are constantly moving around and sniffing its much too difficult to check their mouth and keep them still. If you put your fingers even near their mouth they may bite. If you do something a hamster does not like they will let you know for sure they do not like it :P I think her best bet would be to take the hamster to the vet if she wants to have its mouth checked.

Are you posative the hamster is a boy? - I was going to suggest the hamster may not be on heat which may stop it from eating as much. You must find out what type of hamser food it is as there is so many out there - plus if you take him to the vet then the vet may ask too. My hamster stopped eating he's hamster mix when I went away on a 6 month vacation last year, he was wasting away basically, when I got back home he picked up and was eating again. How often do you hold your hamster? He may be missing the comfort of he's mum or the rest of the hamsters (because he is still quite young). Also is your hamster a Dwaf hamster or Syrin hamster? If it is a Dwaf hamster then it might be 'depressed' or lonely as they need to be kept together with either one or 2 of its own kind of breed.

I don't own a hamster, but I have experience with animals. It is possible.

There cannot be much wrong with your hamster if he's eating vegetables. Same problem with my hamster, he won't eat hamster food, only vegetables and cereal. We have had him for 3 years and he's getting quite old but he's still eating and very active.

Just keep an eye on him as when hamsters are young their taste buds adapt to different tastes.

Also make sure you check him and get him out every night, always replace new food per night or sometimes they will get very picky with the food and end up not eating it.

You want to throw in maybe a tough peice of chewy stick too. Hamsters teeth can grow quite long (hence why they gnaw on the cage) So you need to get their teeth size down or they can develope problems later on.

Hope this helps.
