Discuss anything means nothing now, it's either spam or belongs in one of the forums. Not sure why this forum even exists :S

For the things that don't fit in any other forums. Its only moved to spam if it obviously has nothing to do with anything vaguely ineresting or discussable. There isn't a guide on what is spam and what isn't, its up to the mods to use their judgement.

This is a tough one. You sometimes have to look at replies to judge whether the thread is spam or not, for example: 'I went to Thorpe Park today' could turn into a discussion about Thorpe Park, or it could (and probably would) result in replies like 'fantastic....' and 'gd for u', in which case it is spam. If the user has posted something like 'I went to Thorpe Park today, have you ever been? What did you think of it? Favourite ride?' then that's worthy of discussion.

That's a good summary from the user jesus there.

Thorpe Park goes in the Tourism/Travel forum :P I can't think what possibly could go into the discuss anything forum... Birthdays and celebrations are the only thing, most things in that forum are news or entertainment related.

Yeah he just gave that as a random example though lol. And yeah most things have a forum.

Eh and who gets to decide what is "interesting or discussable". What someone classes as interesting may be spam to someone else. For instance, I could post a thread on the sky and how I love the fact it is blue... However someone else may class this as spam.

To be honest, I think we have gotten a bit too caught up in trying to predefine exactly where every possible topic should be placed to the point they are now counteracting each other out and we have nowhere to post at all.

I think more than that we've been moving towards creating something for *everything* to have a section which has slowly restricted the number of "Discuss Anything" type topics. With all the requests for a new sub-forum because there wasn't one to cover it, Discuss Anything became less useful. However, maybe we could merge the unpopular and unused forums back into Discuss Anything?

And maybe rename it Discuss Anything Else if we must :P

That, my friends, is a good idea.

His thread was pretty spam worthy.

"wt u think of nancy"
--
"ye discuss"

The think I would put in Disscuss Anything is things like "What would you do if the world only consisted on 1,000 people and you were one of them."

I agree. You would at least type a bit civilized to show that you're not in the spam section. :P

Or actually go by what spam means and not re-write a definition for it to suit HxF  Spam is literally crap and is obviously meant to be crap, stuff that isn't useful.

Great post.

Lol I am surprised how much I have been agreeing with you lately :P (It's so out of my nature :P)

I recently mentioned the Spam v Discuss Anything idea to Elkaa and it is a toughie but it is up to Mods to move as they see fit.

For example a post in Discuss Anything which says "Davina McCall is fit" would be moved to spam but if you were to create a discussion i.e. "Who thinks Davina McCall is a good presenter?" then it'd be discuss anything.

In my opinion anyway :)

That's not spam... A thread title cannot tell you what is spam and what isn't, it can only suggest. What tells you what threads/posts are and are not spam are the posts and replies made in the thread. A thread can be useful if it had "Davina is FIT," because it is sharing the opinion of another member which is what a forum is about. It is only spam if the post made in the thread is unrelated and incredibly useless to the forum.

When I was a moderator in General I would wait for the topic to get a few replys. If they were like "lol" etc then I would move it, even if it was a civilized topic. If there was only one silly reply then they would obviously get a "Do not post pointlessly" edit. Like the other moderators are saying, it's a tricky one but it's down to personal judgment.

merge unused sections with discuss anything, one being the joke forum - it's hardly used, the only real reason threads are in there because they are moved from discuss anything.

I didn't just mean the thread title. If somebody posted in the forum the thread title "Davina is fit" with a post saying "Davina is fit" I would remove it straight away because it isn't a discussion. It is spam.

Every moderator has a different view really so I guess it's up to them. I do feel that the line between Spam and Discuss Anything isn't very clear. Discuss Anything doesn't mean it literally whereas it should. Therefore, DA should in theory be merged with Spam but then you've got the issue of people who genuinely want to start discussions getting replies such as "lol@u" etc.

I completely see where you are all coming from but you must also understand that it's hard for moderators to decide what is Spam and what isn't too :)

You wait to see if it is spam... Not predict it is. Finding out what is and isn't spam isn't a hard task, it's just an excuse really... Spam is obvious after a few meaningless posts. It might be worth making a rule for the moderators guide that threads must be left for a page or so before it is removed.

Yeah but what I am saying "Davina is fit" is a post that is already spam on its own. It's a spam thread. It doesn't ask a question or give cause for debate and that therefore, in my opinion, makes it Spam.

But by definition, it isn't spam unless it causes seemingly pointless posts afterwards. Someone could reply "Yeah, why do you think she's fit?" and therefore a discussion is born.

To be perfectly honest, having a discussion like this and trying to generalise to cover everything isn't going to get us anywhere, it has to be decided on a case-by-case basis. You can't add anything into the moderator guide to substitute human judgement and common sense. I'm sure the mods of the general forum are intelligent enough to differentiate between spam and genuine discussion, as are most members.

True, Gomme but more often than not someone would say 'yea lol'.
So you are both right - depends what happens at the time :D

You don't need alot of judgement to notice 1 page full of spam or 1 page not full of spam... Unless HxF goes about hiring the un-dead and indeed the brain dead for moderators... Which I hope not :P

Exactly - and that is the great problem we are facing with it now. Because there is so much confusing about where you should post and all and many forums now have little, or no, meaning - you are technically right to post just about wherever you damn well want.
