Lol a 13 year old has corrected NASA. Lmao at the way they call them boffins.

BERLIN (AFP) - A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASA's estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth, a German newspaper reported Tuesday, after spotting the boffins had miscalculated.

Nico Marquardt used telescopic findings from the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) to calculate that there was a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth, the Potsdamer Neuerster Nachrichten reported.
NASA had previously estimated the chances at only 1 in 45,000 but told its sister organisation, the European Space (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/space.html) Agency (ESA), that the young whizzkid had got it right.
The schoolboy took into consideration the risk of Apophis running into one or more of the 40,000 satellites orbiting Earth during its path close to the planet on April 13 2029.
Those satellites travel at 3.07 kilometres a second (1.9 miles), at up to 35,880 kilometres above earth -- and the Apophis asteroid will pass by earth at a distance of 32,500 kilometres.
If the asteroid strikes a satellite in 2029, that will change its trajectory making it hit earth on its next orbit in 2036.
Both NASA and Marquardt agree that if the asteroid does collide with earth, it will create a ball of iron and iridium 320 metres (1049 feet) wide and weighing 200 billion tonnes, which will crash into the Atlantic Ocean.
The shockwaves from that would create huge tsunami waves, destroying both coastlines and inland areas, whilst creating a thick cloud of dust that would darken the skies indefinitely.
The 13-year old made his discovery as part of a regional science competition for which he submitted a project entitled: "Apophis -- The Killer Astroid."

Well I can believe it but I'm sure they'll re-coordinate the satellite.

I bet NASA are crying at getting corrected by a 13 year old. Oh well, the 13 year old may have a nice future now?

By the time its 2029, I think our technology will be much better, so what do we have to worry about?

Oh well, it's only Earth.

They're probably relieved it wasn't a Russian.

Fire a nuke at it when it gets too close :D

So true hehe. The russians will be giggling I'm sure. That's quite worrying though tbh... Technology scares me sometimes.

Fire a nuke at it when it gets too close :DI think that's all they can really do, we can evacuate potential area's (the Atlantic ocean lol) and we could try firing numerous nuclear warheads at it. I just think it's too fast and heavy to be able to destroy it though, I'm sure accuracy wouldn't be an issue it's just it could be pretty big, it'd also cause lots of radiation in the air and regardless of all that, the smaller debris would still fall to Earth.

"If the asteroid strikes a satellite in 2029, that will change its trajectory making it hit earth on its next orbit in 2036."

Judging by the weight and speed of the asteroid, I am fairly certain that the asteroid would just mow down the satellite. Plus the 'if' seems like a really big 'IF' to me... Quite funny he corrected NASA though :P

To be honest, we could have a way to stop it in 21 years :P

Or they may not even have to stop it, as they will be able to make more acurate calculations in 21 years :P

im scared now lol, seriously knowing the fact that in 21 years and im still alive the world COULD be destroyd because of astroids lol, seriously :( i wanted to live until i get very old and then die in my sleep, not die Young and a meteor thing hitting me lol especially one weighing that 200 billion tonnes!!!!!!!! i mean the one in 21 years miss's *phew* then in 39 another one comes!!!!!!!!! OMG! if it miss's again will it come back round in 49 or sumtin? lol

Eh.. how do they know that thers even a asteroid? Plus. our technologie will be better. might even be able to go to that asteriod itself befor it hits us and get it..

If they blow it up, you will have the debris raining down, doing massive damage. You cant destroy atseroids you have to hit it with something big to just knock it off course slightly so it will miss Earth and go hit mars or summin:D

awwwww, thats a shame the wee aliens will get blown to bits.... awwwwww:( lol :P LETS BLOW EM UP! our chance to stop a alien invasion has came! lets blow em up and deny we ment it! muwuahahaha :eusa_danc lmao :P

In space theres no mass or weight. You could lift the astroid up if it was still.
A touch on the satelite would move it but they can move the satelite.

Fire a nuke at it when it gets too close :D

it depends what type of astroid it is.. sometimes yes that would work but there is a type of astroid which would just absorb the impact from a nuke like a sponge.

1 in 450 chance
Nothing to get too worried about to be honest.

still 1 in 45000 still a chance.

Mr.Sam
18-04-2008, 03:40 PM
there is always a chance of anything happening. it's just depends wether the odds are massive or tiny.

it's something like a one in 20 billion chance of someone dying from a tea cosy related accident.

still 1 in 45000 still a chance.

and 45000 isnt a big odd. As thousands of astroids past earth each year.

Hahaha, no. They'll probably fire hundreds of hydrogen bombs at it.

Oh well, the worlds meant to end in 2012 anyway.
But if we survive that, in billions of years the moon will hit the earth then in another few billion the sun will heat up the earth and our kiddywinkles will burn.

Ahah dam those science books.

erm... we get so many of these and we defeat them. Its very unlikely it'll hit and end earth, lol.

I remember when everyone said we was going to die in 2010

The sun is dying, not heating up :S
