What type of files? Many documents can be opened on Mac OS X; the extensions are usually dependent upon applications rather than the OS. (So there may be no need for conversion.) If you're looking to run your .exe files on OS X then it won't be happening because of the different architecture on the Mac... you'll have to grab a fresh suite of apps.

There was Darwine for power pc macs but nothing has come about that can be easily achieved for running on intel. There's crossover I think though, my friend tried to run Steam and TF2 on it but he said it wasn't as good as windows.

There will be equivalent programs if you are after them. If you want to open office files there's neo-office, gimp for graphics etc.

There are a few different ways of getting Windows applications and files running on Mac OS X. You can use a virtualisation program, such as Parallels for Mac or VMware's Fusion.
You can also, with the advent of Intel chips in Mac computers, dual boot into Windows - you'll find Boot Camp as part of the new Leopard operating system.

And then there is the very flaky issue of Wine. You can get Wine for Intel, but it is very unstable, and anything remotely graphical will send your Mac into some sort of seizure.

Wine: http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX
Boot Camp: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html
VMware Fusion: http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/

I hope that helps you,

Stephen
