Hey,

I have been planning to setup a home server for some time now but over the weekend I have been putting my plan into action. Basically it is my old computer running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition as an Active Directory Services domain controller.

Specs:

AMD Athlon X2 4600+
2GB RAM
250GB HD
(I removed the graphics card to conserve power)

All the computers in the house are hooked up to the server and take advantage of Active Directory. Basically anyone in the house can logon to any computer and access all their documents, settings, etc - Bit like at your school for example. I am planning to add the ability to VPN into the server so I can access my files while I am away.

Thanks,

Tom

I've been thinking of setting up something similar, how difficult is it to set up?

Did you acually pay for it :P and also is it as easy as just popping the disk in to install it...

the server is very install to install it is as you say, as simple as inserting a disk and clicking next anumber of times

Making the server a domain controller is sligtly more difficuilt but still not very hard, nor is adding the computer and users to the network

Mantaining it is normally the harder part - but it normally just takes care of its self... there are plenty of tuts on the net including quite a number boring ones from microsoft

I know i really want a go, but my spare comp has just rubbish specs. Plus i dont think we really need somert like this but i want to experiment!!
Also, the price of Windows Serve is just ridiculous, unless someone knows a better way to get hold of a copy :rolleyes:

I got the ISO from a direct link to a file on the Microsoft Website ;) Technically I have not cracked anything - it is still a `evaluation` copy though you won't see any screens asking you to activate ;)
