Depends on what you want to spend. A small car with a small engine is a must unless you're very well off.

Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat Punto, Ford Fiesta, Citroen Saxo or Renault Clio are your best bets for a cheapish first car.

I would say that the best first car you can get is a Rolls Royce Phantom (250k+).

If that is out of your price range.. unfortunately then I would say something like a Bently Arnage (175k+), even still if that is out of your price range maybe a Range Rover Overfinch (100k+). And if you really are pinching the pennies a Pegeuot 206 (5k+).

Get a Clio like I did. 1.2 Dynamique would be your best option for style etc.

You want one with less than 60k miles, full service history (FSH) and not too old if you can.

that's nothing! No, it is quite a lot. Just because you have loads of miles on your cars doesn't mean everyone else does.

They still work fine! The higher the miles = cheaper the price, if a car with high miles is going to work the same as a car with fewer miles, I know what the obvious choice is for me.

Also, have you ever thought about a car with a salvage title, they tend to be cheaper, and most times you can never tell it was in an accident!

It depends whether it's motorway miles or city miles. There's a huge difference.

And i'd recommend a Clio or Corsa. I've driven a friend's Punto and it was crap so i'd not recommend them.

I plan on selling mine in once it hits around 125k miles, I know that the last 75k miles I put on are highway, and I don't know about the previous 45k. If you maintain a car well (i.e. preventative maintenance), and change the oil regularly, it will last for a long time. I would love to keep my car because the body is in great shape and the engine runs fine, but recently I noticed the transmission slipping from drive to neutral, so I had a transmission cooler installed and it hasn’t done it since, but the transmission man said that within the next 20 or 30k it will need replacing.

I recommend a Ford Fiesta, they're easy to drive and have a cool boot/tail gate opening button :D

I agree, but I know if I had a manual there would be some days I would be too lazy to leave the house if I knew I had to put all that effort into it.

Get something with a small engine, a larger engine can be quite costly, unless you go on a parents policy. you probably don't want a large engine if you have no experience of driving. My car's a 1.9 and it costs me around £1500 p/a for insurance on my parent's policy.

go for manual, you don't want an automatic.

In the States, the size of the engine has nothing to do with the price of the policy. My mom thought her insurance would go down when she switched from the 2002 BMW 745i, to the 2006 Lexus GS300 her insurance went up! She was shocked because it was going from a V8 to a V6! The insurance companys explaniation was "the car is a sportyer model, and it's an all-wheel drive".

Over here the insurance company basicly pulls a number out of their *** and makes up some phony excuse why.

The person wanting to know lives in the UK, so engine size effects the price of car and insurance. Jesus' Clio is a 1.2 model and the same age as my Fiesta, mine cost about £5000 because it was a Zetec (second highest model), a 1.4 sized engine and a 5 door (I think Dynamiques are 3 door only aren't they?) So all those things effect the price, even though the cars are just as good as each other really...

Get a Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi LX (2002-date)

-Torquey diesel engine
-Cheap insurance
-A/C
-Heated front windscreen

Or go for the Zetec model and you'll get body coloured bumpers, front foglights and 15" alloy wheels but you'll lose out on the A/C and the heated windscreen unless you can find one with those fitted optional.

lucky for you over there, it dramatically changes the price over here. I could afford an Evo V but the insurance would have been £3k provisional on my parent's policy. I was lucky enough to get a Golf 1.9 GT TDI for £1500. (was around £800 provisional)

I'd reccomend a Fiesta, obviously because I drive one, to be honest I'd stay away from Corsa's as the steering just doesn't cut it compared to competitors, go for a 1.25 or 1.4TDCi Fez.
