View Full Version : We're all dead (Large Hadron Collider)

Yeah, read it.
There is a possibility that Micro Black Holes will be formed, worst case scenario, doomsday occurs..
They want to collide protons, which isn't the best idea..

Nothing bad will happen.
they probably know what they're doing.
Yeah, but the fact that there's a chance of micro black holes forming, which can lead to doomsday, not exactly the best experiment to be doing when it can jepodise the whole world..
And there's also Strangelets which can change all atoms on Earth into "strange matter".
this is another one of those "6th of the 6th 2006 OMG DEVIL WILL COME!!" things.
Can't see it happening

Oh no, it could happen if they've got things wrong ;)
You'd just better hope their years of research has paid off.

Can't see what happening? The experiment?
It's got a planned date..
The fact that the black holes and strangelets may appear is a totally different thing, but there is a chance that it could happen, the scientists that are operating/building the device have stated that.
...and I don't believe all that 666 ****.

I mean the blackholes, I know the experiment will

i don't tend to trust much i see on wiki
Yeah and do you actually realise how unlikely it is that they will be formed? Anyway scientists have predicted if they are even formed that they will collapse as soon as they are formed.

Predictions can go wrong as they are after all just scientific guesses.

IF it happens then it happens...Nothing we can do about it

If these micro black holes are produced they will just decay due to Hawking radiation, plus in that wiki article it says theres a 1 in 5,000,000 chance of a doomsday scenario.

I'm sure they did this once already in Genova.
They fired 2 subatomic particles at each other

Yeah, and it also says that they don't have any clue as to whether the Hawking radiation still exists..and if it does, what it would actually do, as it is only a theory..

I see Bin Ladin is going to be wanting to get his hand on this.

Haha.
I bet he's like shaven his beard and is living in the US or UK.

The countdown timer was set to the 15th of May because there was no definite time given for the actual activation, recent events show that CERN wont be dividing by zero until much later on in the year, so now the countdown timer will be reset again and will be continually tweaked to go by the latest info that CERN are releasing.
So sorry to disappoint you all, but you wont be dying tomorrow.
Won't be happening for a while yet. ;)

The first beams are due for injection mid June 2008 with the first collisions planned to take place 2 months later.
I knew it.

I'd rather be naive about the whole thing.

I told my friend about this and he's like one of those impossible people and he just makes stupid theories about it all, turning it into a joke with a crappy accent etc.

I read that the black holes will probably be so small that they will evaporate immediately. Even if it did happen it would probably happen in a nanosecond which we wouldn't even notice.

We are not all dead. Maybe next generations are dead, but it's unlikely it will ever happen in our lifetime.
i read they actually are doing it this month

Nah, they're turning the machine in tomorrow and colliding the protons in 3 months.

Isn't this a good thing, shouldn't they be building shuttles to go into the black holes?

You do realise what the theories of going into a black hole are, right?

If it was that dangerous that something would happen, it wouldn't be allowed to activate.

Lots of micro blackholes have been produced, they get pulled into the core by gravity. They pose no immediate danger.
Wheres every one getting this information from?

If the governments of the 23 countries thought like that, there wouldn't be a LHC.
So is it in Cool Down process now?
As on LHCountdown it says 53 more days (Take it that's till the collision)

Most of the media doesn't know about it so word isn't going to spread as quickly, plus I think they've convinced everyone that nothing bad's going to happen.
But something bad CAN happen.
Closer to the actual date, it will probberly be all over the news
Stacey.

It's weird that it isn't on the news now. They love creating moral panics..

Nothing would happen if a black hole was created, a black hole establishes itself by drawing in everything around it.. so in a vacuum sealed room it would collapse in on it's own gravity.
Thus.. the world is saved.. tada!
Seriously.. CERN are complete geniuses, I think they know what they're doing.
