Hey everyone.

I just purchased an iMac off the Apple website so it should arrive in the next few days.

The specs are...

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
250GB hard drive1
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memoryI'm a first time Mac user and I suppose it'll take a little bit of time to get used to it.

Anyone got any tips or recommendations?

Cheers.

First of I would like to say Well Done for buying a Mac. You have one great experience. I suggest using an application called "Adium" for instant messaging such as MSN. As the Microsoft version is crap. If you do have any questions etc. I'm sure you can contact me or anyone else who uses mac. :)

Thanks Matt.

I've been researching MSN on Macs and I reckon Adium will be my best choice.

I reckon.. all you mac users shoud collaborate a huge guide of things you'd do with pc's and the alternatives on a mac. it would egt stickied for sure.

I'd suggest when you first get it is delete the crap games you get with Macs. No idea why you get them as I've never met anyone who plays them. Then download the following;

Adium - www.adiumx.com
GrabUp - www.grabup.com
Coda - www.panic.com/coda
Transmit - www.panic.com/transmit
Twitterriffic - www.twitter.com/downloads (only if you use Twitter of course)
Firefox - www.firefox.com
Firebug - www.getfirebug.com
Flock - www.flock.com (works much faster on a Mac with no splash, great if you use social network sites)
Skype - www.skype.com (much sexier on a Mac ;))
Wakoopa - www.wakoopa.com
Growl - www.growl.info (controls notifications for numerous applications)
Flip4Mac - www.flip4mac.com (allows you to play .wmv)

Use Quicksilver - it is by far the most useful application on my Mac.

It is basically an application launcher but can utilize plugins to send emails, run scripts etc.

May I recommend a app. called Skitch.

Skitch if for like.. if you see a cool image on the web, or something on a webpage, open skitch, select the area, make any necessary markings or text, and click upload, it uploads to your private "Stash" of images you have done.

Its a great app and is currently in open Beta, so take advantage of this before they close it!

Watch the video on the website then scroll up to download. You will have to sign up to get your Skitch account to upload images, quicker than going to imageshack or another image-hosting website. The video shows you all the features I missed out :D

http://skitch.com/#demo

If your a regular IM'er or music fan.. this is cool.

Its called CoverSutra. Simple play a song in iTunes and it will show up on your desktop. You can also quicky do iTunes tasks which is pretty neat.

You can get a trial from simple googling CoverSutra, I dont know if you can buy in UK but im sure there are other ways of getting it.
http://img.skitch.com/20080519-mqed6626pekddpbr3npcf6ux61.png
Thats some of its features, im not very good at explaining things sorry.

If your into image editing, I reccomed Pixelmator, does everything photoshop does for dirt cheap.

I have been a mac user for just over 2 months now and havnt regretted it once.

Some cool websites you might like -

http://www.tuaw.com/ and http://interfacelift.com/ - You will use that a lot because the Mac is so customizable.

Enjoy, if you need help, just PM any of the regular Mac forum members or myself as MattGarner said xD

Well done - you've made a brilliant choice.

I've yet to find a Mac user who doesn't love their Mac. You get so many Windows users saying, "Oh I hate my PC, it's always crashing" or whatever... but with Mac's? Everyone who owns one loves them. It is a truly awesome, innovative product.

I don't love mine. I would agree that it is better than Windows, but not by a huge amount. My Mac crashes far more than my PC ever did. But I still use my Mac and like it simply because, aside from the problems it has, it is still a pleasure to work on and use on a daily basis.

My mac has only crashed once when my ext hd bounced on me when I had a lot of stuff going on and I got the Spinning beachball. But im only on 1.83 ghz and had around 13 apps open, so my own fault. But macs hardly crash.

Another plus.. Very very very very very very hard to get viruses :D

*Impossible to get viruses.

Unless the virus has been programmed to attack a specific computer, and a specific user account on that computer, it will not work.

Vista never crashes, I have never heard someone say how much they love their Mac over a PC because Vista/XP crashes? I know quite a few people who absolutely hate the things, and they are using the top notch iMacs in our two school media suites.

I don't love mine. I would agree that it is better than Windows, but not by a huge amount. My Mac crashes far more than my PC ever did. But I still use my Mac and like it simply because, aside from the problems it has, it is still a pleasure to work on and use on a daily basis.

Most truthful post I have seen in a LONG time +REP if I can.

Watching the videos you make your Mac is fricken slow, it takes ages to load up Photoshop etc... so ******** on your behalf.

Unless the virus has been programmed to attack a specific computer, and a specific user account on that computer, it will not work.

Anything made by humans has errors, if there are errors, there are people to exploit them, if there are people to exploit them, there are Viruses for the Mac OS.

If it was like that easy to do it, why aren't people doing it then?

Because there aren't enough Mac users to justify writing a virus for, though, if thyey did they would get a hell of a lot of machines, I bet none of you are running any sort of AS, AV or Firewall.

Where does this idea that Macs don't get viruses? I hear it quite often yet see stories of viruses for Macs on the internet and the one thing Macs hate are Mac viruses, because they do a helluva lot more damage than when a PC gets one, because a PC can get around them and doesn't take alot of harm, yet a Mac crashes and most of the time you need a new one. Plus Macs crash badly wheneever they happen to crash, I know someone who's Mac deleted it's own OS. I don't hear that from a PC user, unless they're incredibly stupid.

How predictable for Tawm to come in a brag with his "amazing computer". You get very protective/defensive when it comes to these topics dont you? :P

We have a 3GB Ram 3.2 Ghz Vista computer which we use for song editing, storing recorded tracks, holding a large back catalogue of songs. Vista doesn't seem capable for that. It was much easier accessing them in XP. My parents are seriously considering getting a mac after seeing mine, and the fact that its visible more easier.

But yeah, thanks Tawm, provoke a fine situation why dont you (y).

And Nick. It is possible, its been done, but it is near impossible to get one. Most people say it is impossible, even apple. But im sure all tech machines have they're vulnerabilities.

Nick.
21-05-2008, 08:14 AM
Sorry, but Tawm - you're trolling. If you hate MAc OS X so much then why come trolling in the Apple forum? :S

My Mac loads Photoshop in 3 seconds flat... so I don't know where you've gotten this stupid idea that it takes ages to load Photoshop on a Mac. It depends on the spec?

When people say the market isn't big enough to make a virus for Mac's - that's total bull. Apple sell more computer than Dell, and although they may not have more Market share, they are used a lot. The arguement is flawed - do you not think if a Mac virus was possible somebody would of made one by now? Wouldn't it be awesome to be the first person int he world to make a virus for a Mac, even if there were only 100 people using Mac's? Someone would want to prove Apple and all the fanboys wrong no matter how big the user base was. I know if I had the knowledge to make a virus I'd be constantly trying to make a Mac virus (if it was possible) just for the glorification of being the first person in the world to create a virus for OS X.

Tom, stop becoming so defensive. This is a thread in the Apple catogery, about Mac's... You're trolling...

I think what Nick is saying, is that he is just..

He isn't trolling, but coming into mac threads, bragging, being a topic hijacker, and an all round pain the in the backside is annoying.

I know im not the only one who thinks this as there is more than a handful of people who think the same. Tawm seems to brag a whole lot which is a real pain, no-one cares tbh. If your sharing what you have with everyone else in a nice way, thats cool, but you seem to be gloating when you do it, which is when I personally switch off and that gives people mixed opinions on you.

Thanks to Nick for explaining that earlier, thats basicly what im saying. My AS doesn't help :(

There is enough Mac Users world wide for someone to make a virus for them. But no, we hardly see any. Why would we did some AS, AV or even a firewall on mac when we have no "Threat". Although the mac does have a firewall anyway, but meh. Tom like I said above, Chill you. Your a 14/15 year old, you don't want grey hairs when your 20.

Anyway school macs are slower. Photoshop runs alot faster on my mac than it ever did on pc, also protools is just amasing on mac but sucks on pc. If you love your vista then hey we will see whos smileing if you get a virus :).

1) School computers always suck. We got brand new xp computers last week, still take around 5 minutes to start up. Schools dont seem to like spending the few extra "Dorrar" on some RM computers lately, therefore stuck with crap PC's.

2) I doubt that, techies in schools hardly do much apart from sit in the server room blocking sites :D

3)I have also noticed a conciderable difference on a mac that PC with photoshop

old speed was 2.0ghz with 2gb ram.
Mac speed 1.83 ghz with 2gb ram, photoshop feels much faster.

4) Lol with the virus comment, hi5.

Seriously though, I have had a mac for 2 months, crashed once. I do heavy video and image editing... your doing something wrong then surely.

Another 1GB of memory would have costed an extra $150AUD, plus they would have had to send it to China then back to Australia and then to me so it would have taken longer to get here :P

Plus I can buy the RAM cheaper off the net.

I'm thinking of adding another gig, but it seems to be running quite nicely at the moment.
