MPs Allow "Frankenstein" Embryos

Updated:18:48, Monday May 19, 2008
MPs have voted to allow the creation of "frankenstein" embyros for research into tackling diseases.

It is the first in a series of free votes on the most controversial aspects of the Human Fertility and Embryology Bill.
Gordon Brown had encouraged members of all parties to pass the measure and Tory leader David Cameron also voted in favour of "admix" embryos.
Scientists will now be allowed to insert the nuclei of human cells into animal eggs, creating hybrid embryos which grow for up to 14 days.
As a result, stem cells can be harvested and used to create brain, skin, heart and other tissue for treating diseases - before the embryos are destroyed.
The technique is said to get around the current shortage of stem cells for research - largely due to a lack of availability of human eggs.
Critics of hybrids have branded them "Frankenstein science", saying it is obscene to combine human and animal genetics.
They also question the benefits, insisting other methods are more effective.
MPs have three further free votes: on the creation of "saviour siblings" whose genetic material could help sick relatives; giving lesbians equal rights to IVF treatment and on amendments to tighten abortion laws, by reducing the upper limit from 24 weeks to 22, 20 or even 16 weeks.

I seen this on the telly and well... Some things, I had to feel sorry about because there was a kid who was just like 9 and he was probably going to die at 20 if he didn't get embryo treatment. you do wonder, do religious people believe in suffering of young children and think that despite there are ways of saving them, they'd just not?

i find them heartless for stuff like that. science is there to be explored & whether you like it or not, it's going to happen. religion may be big but god damn the government don't take a huge notice.

Good, now we can start to make better progress finding cures.

How is this wrong? All they are doing is mixing together a few cells nothing more? They don't feel or react in any way....

All these religious folk who condemn it i ask you this, do scientsist tell you how to follow your religion?

The answer is a resounding no

This is the knews I love. When breakthroughs are allowed to happen. It is an embryo but at 14 days old it cannot feel, think, hell most of it's stem cells aren't even specialised at that stage in my opinon at 14 days it's just a lump of tissue.

I think that's the idea yeah, it's easier and quicker to do this and use the tissue from these 14 day old things than to get a load of human eggs (lol that sounds so weird) for stem cells

I'm all for this, if it doesn't have a CNS it can't feel pain and it isn't concious thus making it not alive imo.
