Mac mini if you have a spare screen etc, if not and want a cheap option get a macbook and get education discount :)

I'd go with either an iMac or a MacBook. Depends what you like to use better, a desktop or laptop. I recently purchased an iMac and it's great! No regrets whatsoever!

If you don't need to move it around go for an iMac but I have a macbook and love it. You can't go wrong either way.

He still could use it on his TV. But I know what your saying. Like this guy has said Mac Mini is always a great Mac to start with, thats what I did! Its a great little machine and runs OS X Leopard pretty well. Although, in the near future I'm thinking of getting a macbook or imac. But time will tell.

An issue with the mac mini at the moment is it is rumored either Apple are stopping the mini or they are releasing a new one.

That really isn't an issue, well not to me anyway. But I'm sure a rumor like that had been going on for sometime, but I'm sure time will tell :P

Well it will be interesting if it's a upgrade or remove.

If a remove it be a shame. Because the mac mini is the cheapest and one the smallest macs Apple do. =[

So far it's the smallest and cheapest, lets see what they got planned, WWDC could be interesting or extremely boring.
