Just got virgin media this morning, the server exchange is right outside our house. We got told that within the next 4 months our 4mb max will be going up to 10mb.
This is not a brag thread, I was just wondering...
Is this a good speed? When we were with BT Internet we were getting 0.5 - 0.9 download speeds. Pretty poor. Just wondering if these are good speeds? Im not very big on the ISP front.

It's reasonable, mine is close to 5,000 kb/s download speed which is seems good enough, so that will be reasonable too :)
better than mine by about 7X. you should be able to get top speeds as its right outside your house

Well if you're on the 4mb service which you say you are, and are on ADSL, that's a pretty darn good speed. I'd say that you'd be able to get the full 10mb when you get upgraded

Mines 8mb, with o2.
and I live around 3 miles from the exchange, so I get around 5.5 MB, I'd say you're getting a bad deal, until your on 10mb. 5.5 is just about able to use for me.
I'm on VM
Not sure which package here's my speed:

VM does not do 8MB do they?
I though they did 2, 4 and (10 or 20)
You can find out your speed by connecting to your VM box by going your cable box address: http://192.168.100.1 username and password are both root or admin i cant remember :)
Edit:
Here is TalkTalks 'up to' 8MB

The speed's are not correct on the router, you have to measure them yourself correctly.

Yours is good id say.
In our area, were only limited to 1 internet provider (only area in UK which can only have 1).
Its a local provider, so not as many people connected.

Alright guys this is getting out of hand. EVERY thread with people asking if this is what speed they should be getting for their internet turns into a 'Post you own speed' thread. Stop showing your own speeds and answer his question.

I thought posting our speeds kinda answers his question..

No, he's asking if he should be getting that speed compared to the distance he is from the exchange. Also for what package he is on.

Mine's about 1.5mb, go figure :P
It doesn't really matter if its good compared to anyone else, if it doesn't piss you off with slowness than its probably fine

give them a ring and make sure they're giving you what your line can handle, I did that and I get normally around 6mbps on the 8mbps package. They send 8mbps downstream.

Actually I dont mind, im not big on the ISP topic as I mentioned, so its cool seeing other results IMO. If you dont like it im sure theres another thread you can troll in (Y)
But yeah, im loving it so far, much quicker than BT. Anyone else who is with VM, have you heared of speeds being upgraded in Summer or is that just a catch to get people to sign on.. Even if it is, im made up with the whole service! Now only if they could settle they're shi.. with sky!

Thought about moving to VM but the guy's comments on Net Nutrality and their higher price discouraged me.
