I have the choice between 16GB or 32GB of ram, what is ram over 8GB good for..? It's DDR2

DDR2 :P

What board is it going in?

There's absolutely no point in that much unless it's in a server. Having that much may actually slow it down.

Uhh what? It wont slow it down atall, go for 32GB if you feel so inclined.

Why the hell would you want 16/32GB RAM? :S

To feel special? I dunno Personally I'd go 4/8GB Max

You won't need that much unless you're running a server, you will be wasting your money on more than 4GB really...

Lol if you say so.

Haveing more RAM will make the OS use more RAM, and since the bandwidth of the RAM is nothing special, just the standard DDR2 there will be more data going in and out on the same bandwidth.

It will if it's choked creating a bottleneck.

Stephen!

I doubt it. Server boards have high quality memory controllers which can handle all of that bandwidth.

Precisely. And a server OS handles RAM differently to a normal OS anyway.

?

What's the difference between DDR 2 & 3?

Also, I have choice between 16 or 32 as 16 included and 32 added for extra.
Just wondering..

DDR3 is faster but a lot more expensive than DDR2 right now.

Is this for a desktop or server? :|

Stephen!

I really have no idea what's going on... Are you buying these Sticks of RAM to frame them and put on your wall?

No need for that sort of RAM for your needs.

4GB will do fine - £60 from ebuyer.com

Nah there's older ones that are slower. I'm on a PC with SD-RAM right now which is the one before DDR.

Well, Basically what i need is a PC that can handle games & HD video editing no problem. Any recommendations?

4GB RAM then. 8GB if you're buying expensive RAM to go in an expensive motherboard.

Lol ok. Get an x64 version running and i think it'll be a different story. Also, have an integrated graphics card on an x86 and you'll be able to use 4GB. Apparantly there's also a way to make the 32-bit emulate a 36-bit meaning 64GB RAM on a 32-bit.

32GB Will not slow down your server, it will just choke your wallet for about $5000 USD

Go for 16GB and save 3000.

Stephen!
01-06-2008, 02:43 PM
Actually it would cost only $1200 for 32GB.

Hypertext

Ummm. No, your wrong. It costs atleast $400 for one 4GB stick.

Unless you think that an 8-core can hold 16 sticks? That would be really embarassing.

Edit: If your multitasking especially rendering videos/graphics, 16GB is baseline for extreme tasks.

DDR-DDR3 makes a big difference; DDR2-3 does not.

I suggest x8 2GB sticks depending on your uses.

Please just leave this technology forum.

Look, The only time I maxed out my computer was when I was encoding videos, and then it was only maxing out my CPU and not the RAM, 4GB will do you just fine.

The way you said that makes me think you're using a server which has a monitor attached to it :P So I guess you may need that much RAM, but still sounds odd...
Also, Aces said something in the last page about a really good/extreme gaming PC that can multitask, so I'm guessing he doesn't need that much RAM, about 4 GB really?

Actually only 2GB is needed.. 4GB is either needed when

1. You just want to make sure.
2. You don't need 4GB but you just want your PC specs to sound c00l (like me)

Mate, Microsoft Os have not beg desgined for over 4 gb of ram :/
so having 32 gb would wasts money and time, because te os would only ever use over 4/8 gb of ram.
