Have a look on MySpace, you can choose to search by genre so there will be a long list there. :)

you cant make a list. there's always a band that wont fit a genre. i dare anyone to listen to animal collective and put them into a genre. so everyone just calls them "freak folk." genres don't mean anything, i wouldnt be offended by bands who call themselves specific things.

and indie just means a) they release their music themselves or b) they are or were on an independent label.

I think there's only pop and rock and everything comes under either of them.

thanks, +rep

i'm annoyed because genres were supposed to guide you on what music you'd like, but now there's like a million genres with completely warped names like acid rock & crap like that... hm, just wiki'd indie, intrieguing.

just seems like every band that comes out nowadays is a indie band, obv theyre gonna have similar sounds but some who say they're indie, are basically rock. i can't actually use my Genres section on my iPod anymore because I dont know what 'trip-hop' or 'psychadelic rock' is.

its annoying tbh, might just be me but wanted to get it off my chest. bands are annoying sometimes lol.

depends what genre you like the most..
it isnt all pop and rock i dont think and never really has been just them two.

RNB, Hip Hop, Dance and Gospel are also very popular genre's.

I can't be assed with specific genres, it gets confusing. Some bands can release a song that fits genre and a different song that fits a different genre. There are so many sub genres of metal... I just class what I listen to as 'metal', with a few exceptions.

pssshtt indie may mean released on an independent record label, but there's definately an "indie" sound as well. certainly wouldn't go putting napalm death in the "indie" basket, that's for sure.

there lots of silly genres being created.
there are loads of random genres with 'core' on the end..
hardcore, breakcore, mathcore..

i think they're genres anyway.

first off, i'd like to say that bands usually don't define their own genre. they aren't like "LETZ INVENT A NEW GENRE CUZ WE'RE COOL". if there's a new genre, it was invented by reviewers who didn't know where to place them. secondly, are you mad at bands for sounding original and not falling into the stereotypical "rock" and "pop" sounds, or are you just mad at all the ridiculous genres?

Frankly a lot of the metal and rock differences can just be put under rock, the multitudes of different styles of dance music can just be labelled together as dance and so on, sub-genres aren't needed really. If you want to describe a band without just saying "oh they play rock music" then you can actually say what they sound like instead of using stupid new terms.

New genres are made like.. every week, it's impossible.

What? So you want bands to be forced into being part of a genre instead of them having their own unqiue sound?

That's stupid.

i don't think people really get it.

bands don't decide to make a new genre, they just decide to make music. and genres develop, its not like they happen overnight and given a name. they take time, and usually happen well after the formation. for instance, emo. emo has been around for well over 20 years, but it's a recent term. older bands that are now considered "emo" (sunny day real estate, weezer, etc) didn't have that name at the time, but now they're known as pioneers of the genre. they didn't say to themselves "hey, this is a new genre that we're playing, lets give it a name."
