View Full Version : Prom night: A quick review.
heyyy, went to it last night, first ever showing in my local cinema.
So yeah, here goes:
Storyline is good.
Areas do make you jump [if you don't know it's coming].
Acting is very good.
Not a dull moment.
Predictable [I probably think this because I'm a media student, hence knowing the sound effects etc. what they mean, knowing whats round the corner or whatever.]
A bit rushed, it should be a bit longer.
Ending seems a little rushed.
Overall, I recommend this to most of you, even if it's not the original and not full of blood and guts, it's a very good movie with lots of action, along with some great acting etc.

Are you kidding me? This is probably the most watered-down remake of a classic horror film that I have seen to date. The acting was so-so, the attempts at suspense were killed before they even started and the dialogue is plain rediculous. Just about every cliche in the book is sqeezed into 90 minutes of horror - because that's exactly what Prom Night is - horrifically bad.

I'm guessing you must be around 13 or something? Either that or you just enjoy regurgitated rubbish with terrible acting. The storyline was almost nauseating, with the typical American Pie meets scary killer or whatever. It was predictable all the way through, and there was nothing remotely compelling or scary about the film whatseoever.
Advice: Avoid this film and save your 6 quid.
*Being a media student obviously hasn't served you well if you cannot see that this film is yet another terrible remake.
It looked pretty good when i seen the trailer as I am so into American Teen Movies, and I was going to go see it with a couple of friends, but everywhere I have read reviews they have been terrible. The papers, the Tv, this is probably the only review that hasnt ******* this movie off. Still might go and see it.

No - instead invite your friends round to your house and watch the DVD of the original.

:S no one wants to watch the flippin original .. thats why they remade it for a reason .. gosh leave him alone

They remade it because it's called a cash in - milking a cult classic for as much as they can.

they've remade it for a reason.. some very good remakes are ou there yeah bringing a cash in. They remade it so its got better effects then the original so therefore in the way its filmed it will be better.
Thats like saying the film called Black Xmas was a remake, the original was boring as hell as I watched it and then I watched the remake, and it was good.

Maybe we can't all appreciate the ancient version because we're not as intelligent or as traditional as you and not everyone looks so deep into films. I like most films I watch and I rarely find fault in them; re-makes (in my opinion) are a hell of a lot better than the originals because of the improved special effects, picture and sound quality.
Is no-one else allowed an opinion because when people disagree with you, you snap? You seem to enjoy criticizing everyones views and it's not on - Let everyone have there own opinion, if he enjoyed the film then leave him to it, not everyone likes the same thing.

i prefer re-makes, makes them more modern and more now.
back then you couldn't get away with such good effects and gore.
EG. TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
the re-make is AMAZING.

i agree alex..
they have better effects and sometimes even better actors/actress's.
you cant sit there and say every remake is terriable, and the originals are the best. i wouldnt say prom night was a cult classic at all.. :S
then again maybe you think it is because your a big fan of it..

People have a right to their opinions just as much as I have the right to rubbish them.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the greatest horror films of all time, the remake was fairly decent, but is tenfold inferior. I don't think anyone shares your view on that.

It's aimed at teenagers, hint the 15 rating. They aren't going to make a teenage movie, full of blood and guts so it gets given an 18 and no teens can see it.

Sorry but I disagree. The original was actually funny not scary..
Misawa no point arguing with people over it really, not everyone has a huge interest in films like you, they expect to see all the nice special effects because that's the time we live in, once they see some 2008 movie with amazing effects then a 1970 movie with awful effects then they automatically choose to watch recent movies because of the effects
I'll watch anything that doesn't bore me to death, generally I find a remake to look nicer but come out pretty badly, it'll be like remaking a movie that was already perfect just lacking effects, only teenagers with a genuine interest in movies will actually enjoy a rather old film to it's remake really, everyone has what they like, if someone enjoyed the remake then they must of enjoyed it, you enjoy what you like and they enjoy what they like, I'm sure there are alot of amazing movies that I like that you can't stand for whatever reason

i liked it.
and i think most of the modern generation did.
people don't care whether a film is a remake or not
THEY CARE WHETHER IT IS GOOD

Yeah, that's why the age rating is a 15, so I must be 13?
& because I'm a Media student, it doesn't mean I have the opinion of someone who hates remakes?

Exactly.
Ok, we get it.
It's a remake.
I don't think anyone's bothered if it's a re-make.
I enjoyed it, and I think a few more people will too.

On the topic of remakes, imo, worst ever remake has to be Charlie & the chocolate factory
Radio Times gave it 1 star - I don't base all my decisions on what Radio Times say, but even Super Hero Movie got 3 stars, so it must be quite crap.

just to annoy misawa:
DONT LISTEN TO FILM CRITICS ;)

i personally never listen to film critics. the films i enjoy, they tend to think are rubbish. if i see a trailer and enjoy it, ill go see the film. not decide whether to see a film based upon a critics opinion.
i wanna see prom night anyway as the trailer looks quite good. dunno when i will though, as im short of money. probably download it lol.

exactly.
and i wouldn't base whether i go to see a film based on it's director alone.

Hmm... I prefer watching an updated movie and then watching the originals. I think the remakes are always so dramatically enhanced that you hardly recognise the movie and they just add these new effects to make it look shinier. I do think that movies do this to cash in on old franchises but hey, thats show business.

The thing I don't like about most remakes is when they try and deviate from the original storyline and add some backstory or subplot and add new music that ruins the suspense. If it were purely for aesthetic reasons then it'd be okay, but remakes are generally jokes. The only good horror remake I can think of is Hills Have Eyes.
